new to linux new to xbmc - dylpdx - 2009-01-29

hi,
i'm really new to linux and xbmc
i have xbmc on my softmodded x-box and really liked it...
i installed the atlantis final version on win xp and ubuntu 8.10
it installs ok and opens ok, but all i get is a white screen where i can't see anything......this happened in both windows and linux
it appears to be running, i just can't see enough to do anything
this same problem happened with elisa media center

my system:

asus p5ql-em mb with intel gma 4500 (g45) integrated graphics
core 2 duo 2.66Ghz
2 Gb DDR 2
ubuntu 8.10 / windows xp pro sp3

really would appreciate any advice....
thx

have you updated your video drivers by any chance? If you are using linux, try Envy to update your drivers.

Pretty sure envy only supports NVIDIA and ATI graphics.

But the problem does sound graphic card related.

envy...
that sounds familiar is that a windows app or linux...and where do i get it?

its a linux app, and as snappz said above, its only for Nvidia and ATI.

to install...
Code:
sudo apt-get install envyng-gtk

intel is natively supported in ubuntu .. So you shouldn't need to install any drivers..

Problem is that most intel chipsets have awful OpenGL support and the drivers are that great either.
Outside of the sdl build XBMC is massively dependent on OpenGL.

My personal suggestion would be to get a real video card.
