Correct way to backup libraries, with thumbs, fanart, everything - ashlar - 2009-02-01

Can somebody help me in understanding the right procedure. I'm sick and tired of having to periodically redownload everything.

Thanks to any kind soul.

I mean, I know about exporting the library. But that is saving only the data, not the images... and sometimes, for reasons unknown, XBMC seems to lose track of thumbs, even if they are where they are supposed to be.
Are .nfo files better?

If you're launching with -p then there should be no need to back anything up as the USERDATA folder is stored in your Docs & Settings (on XP) away from the XBMC folder.

that has changed on recent builds (17507 and up), -p is now for portable edition, STANDARD it now stores it in the userdata folder

The only tip would be stay with a stable release as many things can change in svn. As said in the other thread the path cleanup was merged so the thumbs may now have another url and the library must be rescanned.

If we do a individual file export, where all the info is put into separate nfo files, will we be able to avoid having to rescan online services? Or is that even necessary?

I upgraded to rev17522 (and removed -p from a shortcut) and noticed that thumbs were missing. Decided to delete the whole XBMC profile and start from scratch, but after after rescanning everything into library thumbs are still missing.

Thumbs are under user profile, and show up when browsing in file mode. Movie and tv shows library views are only showing default icon. :confused2:

The library (video or music) should not need rescanning with the path changes - I have not had to rescan mine at all. The old thumbs should load just fine. All that changed was the internal representation of the paths.

toiva: Do a Debug Log.

WiSo, I might agree with the stable release thing. Problem is, as far as I think, 8.10 was lacking fundamental features for a media center software. Latest SVNs have progressed a lot...

Also, I think that inside the program the export library to single file should be clearer. I did not read the whole wiki and assumed, wrongly, that exporting to a single file gave the same results as the multiple files solution. Sad

Does the export to multiple files backup everything? Meaning that whatever path change, rename, whatever you're gonna do in the future won't affect the external files?

I'm just upset because I did backup but I chose the wrong option, which wasn't really easy to tell it was the wrong one. I should have read the Wiki, I know...

Also, I confirm, for me the thumbs are on the harddrive, but there's no way of "telling" XBMC.

Export library to single files puts everything (thumbs included I believe, but you'd be better to test for yourself) beside your movies and shows.

Library seems to be pretty messed up at the moment.
All the movies/episodes are there, and play just fine. If i choose movie/episode information it'll start scraping from a scratch, and after it's finished it adds second movie/episode entry to library, and now thumb shows up with both entries.

Looks like most stuff isn't in your db at all according to the scan log. It's also struggling to connect to the various websites (possibly issues at their end?)

The slash reversal there looks suspect though...

Ok, found a potential issue.

EDIT: Should be fixed in r17527.

Same problem here, using a fresh profile.

Could this fix my missing thumbs as well? Is this the same thing?

- jmarshall - 2009-02-01

Probably, yes.
