rcoops Wrote:Though I fully agree with the idea of thinking outside the box there is a minor problem with your idea that scrolling trough a large list of data is not the way to go. There is little other one can do isn't there? Unless you suggest using speech to lookup the information you will end up moving from A to B to Z by scrolling down and up or left and right if you want to look at a large number of items.
The idea of a desktop where you drop all the data on won't work as you will have an enormous pile of data on a always to small desktop. Scrolling is the only way to deal with this.

Though I agree that the current views are well not the greatest they are just rows of images that move from left to right without much else added, we should not forget that this is still in a development stage and things might change a lot before a release to the public is even though of.

The video looks interesting but so far I don't get the same kind of: "When will it finally be released" feeling as I do with some of the other skins currently in development.

Scotty: Computer. Computer?
[Bones hands him a mouse and he speaks into it]
Scotty: Hello, computer.
Dr. Nichols: Just use the keyboard.
Scotty: Keyboard. How quaint.

Elementary my dear Watson. Search is going to end up being the biggest feature, either that or recently added movies.

I usually search by recently added movie, actor or genre.

If someone says I want to watch Mary Poppins, I do not scroll throw hundreds of a,b,c,m before I reach Mary Poppins.

I either type in Mary Poppins, goto my Disney folder, or my animated genre.

So again Dick Van Dyke with the search, or Julie Andrews, that's of course if I know the actors and actresses.

Touchscreen would be probaly more realistic as what we can do at the moment, but hell virtual gloves such as matrix, or brain thoughts to pick up your desired movie.

Got this bird around, fancy giving her one tonight, and a porno starts to play all by accident lol

Sadly as much as I like to think outside of the box, but work still calls me in the 21st Century ;(

Androids or clones, hurry up I want a night off

If scrolling is your problem then just make your keymap do quick jumps to the letters on your remote. Works fine for me and I have 20tb, not a measley 3.

- MarkTaunton - 2010-06-10

Oooooo 20 tb, well I have a i7920 processor, not a measly 2.5 dual core Wink

Plus I do not have a remote, so that is impossible at the moment lol Not really looked at a remote to be honest, but with 10.5 coming out soon then that will be a more valid reason for having one.

I have something on the iphone to which I occasionally fire up, but scrolling would still reasonably be a problem with all skins.

1. That was my first processor and it still does just fine in that old HTPC. From the sounds of your set up, you went overkill on your processor for what you got going on.

2. Voice activation is the way to go. Mine jumps to whatever letter I say and can handle various phrases for scrolling. Believe me, scrolling is not an issue if you have the correct set up.

I hope you are considering also a big font version for this gorgeous concept !

I shall be building a new comp, as the i7 was basically a build of passion, but obviously I know that it is too powerful for just a media center.

I have a spare 2 gig stick left as Windows 7 does not like 6 gigs for some reason, so stuck with 4 gigs for more stability.

Originally my system was more for games, but then I got seriously into XBMC and media streaming, and having such gorgeous skins.

Now that XBMC is leaving the past, then skins will be more and more hi tech, but in some respects, when THE skin comes out then it would be very hard to top.

I think if you are a futurist, then it becomes more of a passion and obsession than a hobby.

Now if I had not seen all of this before then I would think WoW, as it does look pretty good, and full credit to you.

Sad to say that once you have seen one slanted wall view, you have seen them all, mock ups can look so fantastic and you want to try them straight away, but having the same old skin, e.g confluence or back row rehashed will just become a bore.

Team Blackbolt took a year to design and program Xperience and it looks fresh, colorful and stylish, Shade and Welo are looking more polished and ready for example a TV station to broadcast.

You have done an excellent job in your mock ups, but sadly not raised the bar apart from the TV view for the new 10.5.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but this mockup is over a year old. Most of the recent mockups and builds around now are taking ideas from this mockup. When it was first released there really wasn't anything like it.

On a personal note I find this mockup far more polished than Shade. Shade has too many small design inconsistencies in terms of spacing etc, too many tacky details for my liking such as showing the discs out the top of the cases and the terrible white tubs for folders. Not to mention what is in my opinion a major design flaw; having the huge menu across the top 3rd of the screen while allowing fanart backgrounds. Having said that for the most part I like Shade a lot and I will be using it when its released.
I think Phyek's mockup is too different to compare on whole with Welo.

Note: I edited out some paragraphs of the quote not relevant to my comments.

Those tacky discs can be turned off. Also, I am not a graphics guy and I had to make folders that I thought worked. The top menu was inspired by boxee, I think its different and unique. Just my opinion.

My post was just my opinion too. I didn't say it wasn't different or unique. I just think the top menu is intrusive on the backgrounds especially if its covering the faces of a cast or stars. Wasn't a personal attack just my thoughts on the skin.

If someone wouldn't mind helping me a bit, I am trying to do the home page and I can't seem to figure out how to space the choices by a fixed amount. I know I can space them with each one being 500px etc, but I want it to have 50px separation between each choice. Sorry I am a little new at this :\. Here is where I am now.

You can't.

I did have a play around recently trying to do it for Alaska Revisited using two set of 'auto width' labels but the results weren't up to standard because's there no way of controlling the amount of movement based on the length of the labels.

This is something i started to build a couple of month's ago.

Image

- The home screen is almost complete, i have even coded a animation for a "wave-like effect" but haven't done any texture that i thing is good enough for use in the theme

Image

- Media view, i haven't really done so much with it.
