I didn't know the advantage of 24hz before I read this.
My installation works very well for my need. I have no stutter in the content I play.

I can't use the auto adjust though. I will try to delete the guisettings. I have deleted it plenty of time before though.
I will also try the Option "FlatPanelProperties" "Scaling = Native"
I haven't tried that. I am not a big fan of xorg.cong hacking. Good enough have to be good enough.

- spozen - 2009-08-21

Now i got rid of the "small picture thingy". But it still plays every movie in 50Hz. Anyone else has this problem with the "adjust refresh rate..."?

- vikjon0 - 2009-08-21

Ok. With :
Option "DynamicTwinView" "False"
Option "FlatPanelProperties" "Scaling = Native"

The auto adjust seem to work. I kept the screen setting at 1920x1080 60hz and when ever I start a movie the TV reports 24 or 50hz depending on the content. a lot of content including the killasample seem to be 50hz. The conclusion must be that going for 24hz without auto adjust could be a pretty bad idea.

Hi Vikjon. I'm having lots of trouble with the auto adjust. When you stop videos does it often fall out of fullscreen? And do all your videos get adjusted correctly. I get intermittent problems. One minute it's working at 24 and the next minute it will only play at 60 hz. Any help would be appreciated. My thread here

Well, I just set it up to today. Havent seen any downside yet except that it takes a while to return to the menu since he has to adjust the rate back to 60hz.

I am not sure how I would no if it is adjusted correctly? It looks ok. The TV reports different rates for different movies. Mostly 24 & 50 but on 60hz so far.

- sisyphus - 2009-08-21

Okay. That's interesting.

When I play a file, I cross my fingers. Sometimes it plays correctly (24, 50, or 60) and other times it just plays at 60 (usually drops out of fullscreen too) even if the source is meant to be played at 24 or 50. Often if I try the file again, or restart and try again it plays at the correct rate. But not always.

You'd know if you had this behaviour. I may reinstall and see if that improves things.

Thanks.

I think I've got a way to refresh your resolution info without having to delete your guisettings.xml file and lose all your settings.

1. Back-up your current guisettings.xml file
2. quit xbmc
3. delete your guisettings file
4. start xbmc and let it create a new guisettings file
5. copy the entire calibration section from the new file
6. replace the calibration section in the backup file with the newly copied section
7. replace the guisettings file with the backup that has the copied over section and restart xbmc

it works for me. hopefully it will for you too.

Great, thanks it's pretty anoying to steup everything again and again.

I have now figured out that i am in fact running at 25Hz and not 24, so now i have to add modelines i guess. 60Hz works great, but i wonder why it wants to switch to 50Hz on the killa sample, doesn't come from a HDDVD/Bluray source?

Here's a question for a newbie on both Linux/Ubuntu as XBMC.

I think I have everything running now (Full Ubuntu Desktop with XBMC stable release) on a Asrock ION 330 but I do have one major problem left which is bugging me and it's the final thing I'd like to resolve before I can fully enjoy my system.

Right after following this guide http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=54705 I was having problem with 24p material. Obvious motion judder with camera panning scenes. When I added the "DynamicTwinView" "False" option into my xorg.conf and enabled refresh rates, problems seemed to be solved but the screen was schifted into the upper-left corner of my TV. So I was seeing half of the picture.

I then found a post of someone who said he resolved it and I copied parts of his xorg.conf and now mine looks like this:

Code:

I have no idea what the "modeline" lines in this file mean but apparently they solved the 24p problem. My XBMC menu is also displayed in 24Hz since the appearance settings tell me the resolution is 1920x1080@24hz. I'd rather see this at a higher refresh rate but I don't really care much about this a long as my movies work correctly.

BUT! (you know this was coming... ;-))
When I try to play regular DVD ISO (PAL) files, XBMC crashed back to the Ubuntu login screen. After XBMC automatically restarted the DVD ISO will play but is shown in 50Hz! Which give really horrible motion judder!
The crash only happens once, but after playing another HD file it reoccurs.

Please give me some advice, I really don't have a clue what to do next...

I can try, but I guess someone can correct me if Im wrong. =)

I only use 3 modelines. 1080p@24,50,60 Hz.

I then have Ubuntu to set as 60 Hz. That means that XBMC is running in 60 Hz as standard. With auto refresh rate ON, then the TV change for 24, 25 and 50 Hz. Not for 30 and 60 Hz.

When in 24 or 50 Hz, if you TV is in 60 Hz as standard, you have to recalibrate the screen. Bring up the menu and then recalibrate.

If you have your TV in 24 as standard, then your screen is calibrated for 24, and you have to do it when you're in 50 and 60 Hz.

Thanks for your reply!

You only use 3 modelines? So I have to delete a few so the only ones left over are these:?
Code:
Modeline    "[email protected]"  74.230 1920 2560 2604 2752 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync

I don't have to do anything with the numbers behind de Modelines? What are these anyway?

So I quit XBMC, login to Gnome session and change display settings? Is that all?
When You say recalibrate from XBMC, is this the moment where the numbers behind de modelines are reset and saved with the values that come out of my calibration?

Thanks again! I'm a real noob I know but I'm getting the hang of it... (I guess... Wink)

I use only 3 modelines, because my TV only support those. I dont know how your TV works.

Have you followed this guide?
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=54685&highlight=xorg.conf

There you can read about how to get the right modelines for YOUR TV, and what to add in xorg.conf to get it to work.

The numbers in the modelines are some kind of info, that tell Ubuntu and X whats is OK to use.

The calibration is what you can do in XBMC settings for appearance or video.

But since your TV only switch rate when you're in a movie, you have to bring up the menu, M i think (the one where you can pause and stop and play and go to audio and video settings), and in video settings choose calibrate.

Thanks again but when I tried out that guide I couldn't find any 1920x1080 modes that are valid in the log file so I can't collect my own modeline values.

I collected some other values and tried so stuff out. The only thing that got better is that got better is that XBMC doesn't crash back to login screen anymore but with DVD ISO files still 50Hz. is selected instead of 60Hz. Sad

Well I got so frustrated that I went for complete clean install! No modeline custom stuff just what you wrote in your guide.

Refresh rate switching appears to work better then before! XBMC menu is shown in 50Hz (full-screen) and when I play 24p meterial, it automatically switches to 24Hz and back. DVD ISO files are still shown in 50Hz but without motion judder! Confused I don't care that it's 50Hz, it works fine now. But still when I select a DVD ISO file, X crashes back to login screen. The error messages that are displayed dissapear too quickly so I can't read them. Restarting XBMC will play the DVD at 50Hz but when I select 24p meterial afterwards it will stay at 50hz so I'm back with motion judder until a full reboot.

I'm banging my head against the walls here! Huh

I also noticed that when I select 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. manually from Gnome Desktop I do have an option within XBMC that says 1080p@60Hz. for screen resolution. But this won't last after a reboot...
