[RELEASE] The Big Picture (Pictures) Plugin - rwparris2 - 2009-09-12 02:09

This is a plugin for The Big Picture, a photo journalism blog I enjoy.

EDIT: I could use help finding a better thumb for this. The one there now is the one from boxee, but if anyone would be so kind as to make a new thumb/icon with transparencies instead of the sharp edges of the current one, I'd be very grateful.

Quote: The Big Picture is a photo blog for the Boston Globe/boston.com, entries are posted every Monday, Wednesday and Friday by "ataylor@boston.com". Inspired by publications like Life Magazine (of old), National Geographic, and online experiences like MSNBC.com's Picture Stories galleries and Brian Storm's MediaStorm, The Big Picture is intended to highlight high-quality, amazing imagery - with a focus on current events, lesser-known stories and, well, just about anything that comes across the wire that looks really interesting.

Code:
I. Installation

The prefered way is to install via SVN REPO Installer.
See http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=159135&postcount=1

II. Usage

Left & Right to navigate through the albums.
Select to enter an album.
The 'info' key toggles the title, arrors, and description.
The 'menu' key exits the script.
The 'back' key returns to albums list, or exits the script if already in albums list.
The 'context' key downloads albums in album view, or individual photos in photo view.

Check your keymap.xml file if you're not sure what keys do what.
See xbmc.org/wiki for more information regarding keymap.xml.

This script was based on one done by team BOXEE (boxee.tv | ).
black.png, left.png, right.png, and default.tbn are from the original BOXEE App
main.xml is based on the one in the original BOXEE app.
The rest was done by rwparris2.
There may be an issue on XBOX where the description does not show. If anyone experiences this on XBOX or any other platform, please let me know.

Also on XBOX, I had a lot of memory related issues. The pictures are quiet large, so I don't think there is anything that can be done about it.

Is the size of the text being displayed dependent on the skin?

Yes. Sad Ideally the title would be about 75% as large as darkened area it sits in, if that makes sense.
I've got a feature request on trac to let skins define & use fonts independent of the user's skin.

That's what I thought.

Other than that I thought it works really well. I think it's a very useful method of browsing images.

One thing that I thought might be an improvement would be if you could have the down arrow toggle just the description overlay. Just a possible way to be able to view the text without the other overlays covering up part of the image.

I'm not sure what you mean. You want down to toggle all overlays, the description text only, or everything except the description text?
I'd consider the first two but not the third.

Perhaps a settings file that could allow you to disable title, arrows, and description individually would be best?

- badmoviesnbeer - 2009-09-13 02:01

Yeah, basically the second one.

Love the script. It's great to be able to view these large format photos on a larger screen.

Two questions for you.
1) Would it be possible to handle the entries that use the javascript switch (as seen on a lot of these: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/09/one_year_after_hurricane_ike.html)?

Also, would you be able to create a second script (or extend the Big Picture script), which would handle a similar blog created by Boston.com for sports?:
