Hello all.

I am trying to follow Cron0's method to get sound through NVIDIA HDMI.

In all 3 of my PC's and using Ubuntu 10.04, there is no file called /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf. The /etc/modprobe.d directory is present but no file called sound.conf. However, there is a file called alsa-base.conf.

Also, no file called /etc/asound.conf

Can anyone tell me if these files have been moved in Ubuntu 10.04 ? or should I create them ?

regards

You have to create them.

Hm, I am running xbmc under ubuntu on my Zbox, and everything is working perfectly...well almost.

I am using DVI out to my TV and the optical connection to my 5.1 amp.

Now...the only way I can get sound is to set the audio output to analogue, and if I do that, I lose the 5.1 audio.

If I set it to digital out I get an error about the audio hardware not being initialized.

Help anyone? Huh

Hey guys,

I am trying to get this dam Sound working, I have spent about six hours on this now, I have tried:

http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=540482&postcount=32

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2010/04/17/upgrade-alsa-1-0-23-on-ubuntu-karmic-koala-9-10/

and even the version on Ubuntu forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810

Each of them take an average of 40mins to complete (downloading files etc etc esp the LONG way round downloads 550mb of Linux headers....)...

Each time it goes through everything and every time when I go back and do a :
Quote:cat /proc/asound/version
dvanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.20

it doesn't update it to 1.0.23....

I am running all the commands as sudo, its running on a writable USB stick... what else could it be Sad I would really appreciate the help!

Hi,

I have also been struggling with sound issues with my Zotac Ionitx 330 FE board. That script from ubuntuforums has worked every time that I have
used it. You just have to be carefull (and patient) and do every step just as described in the guide ..it takes time.

Personally I have met a weird problem with my audio setup.
If I install a Full Desktop version of the Lucid with Gnome I can get the sound
working with doing the tricks as Alsa to 1.0.23 version and the NVIDIA drivers
256.35. Then unmuting all the muted things from alsamixer.

The BIG thing was the selecting the output device System -> Pref -> Sound options.....but,

If I want to use light Xfce desktop I don´t have those options to choose the output deviceas HDMI for audio...and therefore it stays muted??

Br,

Zemy

Your links don't work for me, but I recognize that you were trying to reference cr0nos' instructions in one of them.

I just started over, and installed the latest version of the XBMCFreak Live CD. Then, I updated to the 256.35 nvidia drivers, and followed cr0nos' instructions (all I really did was substitute the latest nvidia driver url in his how-to).

Which version nvidia driver have you been using? Does the Alsaupgrade script appear to run ok? Each step (particularly the -c part) took about 5-10 minutes for me. It should work, I have been able to get 5.1 sound from dts/ac3 movies in mkv containers on a local hard drive, as well as mp3 audio over the network, and menu sounds. Seems to be working pretty well so far.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04, 195er nvidia drivers and managed to get audio working with the alsa update script. But I had trouble when using the latest 256er nvidia driver. Is there any advantage of using the 256 driver over the 195?

My major issue still is getting DTS converted to AC3 and passed through via HDMI.

I'll backup and rebuild the whole system again to check I did everything correctly.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I just got rid of Linux XBMC (i.e. XBMClive) installed Windows 7 and put XBMC on that works perfectly now, no need for compiling cr@p etc etc etc Smile

Oh and for the FAN noise - the new BIOS update takes care of that its pretty silent now sits next to my PS3 and I can hardly hear it...

Hi,
I run xbmc on zotac zbox with new nvidia ion. (hd-id11)
Ubuntu Lucid amd64 is my OS.
It may be an old news, but I just got the HDMI sound working without compiling alsa.
I installed alsa from ppa:ricotz/unstable.
linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils pulseaudio linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic.
Then I followed howto in this tread picking up from step 4.
http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=540482&postcount=32.
Works very well.

Hello there,

i'm new in the bussiness and bought me a hd-id11. i installed the latest xbmc live freak edition: xbmcfreak-10.08-svn31632-lucid1! after bios update and good fan noise and installation of xbmc i got me a working system. but some problems still occure:

- i got wlan running but with an inacceptabel speed of 70kb/s via ftp, so i switched back to dlink streaming which is working very well so far

- i'm using a logitech harmony one with an hama mce usb dongel. the remote is working but some commands are missing, like opening a context menu in xbmc or ...

- shuttdown and wake on usb isn't working! that issue was earlier in this thread. has anybody heard anything new?

- my sound worked out of the box with the xbmcfreak-10.08-svn31632-lucid1 version. i'm not using sound over hdmi because my "teufel decoderstation 5" has no hdmi input, so i'm using an optical/spdif cable, which is working very well. except the menu sound. all instructions target the hdmi and no menu sound problem. anybody an idea how to fix menu sounds while using optical sound output? i tried the hdmi fix with the word "optical" instead of "hdmi" inside the asound.conf with no effect ...

help would be nice ...

Hi OJey,

I am using this little tool to get XBMC playing nicely with my Hama MCE USB IR-dongle and Logitech. Just build and execute it. Works like a charm here. To make it run permamently and from start you need to make it a service.
