brock_gonad Wrote:It sounds like you're trying to edit the file from the wrong partition. The instructions you refer to assume you're using pin87a's R3 image. On that image, com.apple.Boot.plist is on /sdb2. On Sam's original image it was on /sdb1.

So make sure you're looking in the right spot. Mount the partition, and the file should be right there.

THANK YOU!!!

Absolutely perfect. Thanks to everyone involved in this, and who helped. What an amazing difference running with linux rather than the default atv os. And, running off the hard drive is even better than off the thumb drive.

pin87a Wrote:Interesting catch on the flac thing. As far as I knew xbmc used internal decoders for everything, but i guess not flac.
Surprised it wasn't automatically installed as a dependency of xbmc when installed from the PPA.

Installing libflac will fix that.
Code:
sudo apt-get install flac

Once this is done, will it stick, or will it need to do on every boot?
Thanks

Also, I didn't realize that the 'Show hidden files/folders' in the skin was not enabled. Once I enabled it, I can now see the .xbmc folder and can create new folders under it that I can access.

Visualizations do work with the default Confluence skin but not with the Night skin. I think it is a problem with the Night skin?! The visualizations are very limited... I'll ask again, where would I put more presets for projectM?? I listen to music much more than watch TV so the settings there are important to me.

Have to agree with all.

Running linux on the hard drive is vastly better (for me) than on USB. Menus much more responsive, back to the performance I was getting on my linux desktop.

Thanks!

Why did you have to say that?!
Now I'll have to go and try.... Big Grin

A few questions....
When the image gets updated, will you have to go through the entire process again to update it?

How would one go about updating the SVNs once the get stable again?

If you were to do an Apple update, you would have to not only install the original ATV (OSx patch), but also the Linux as it would basically wipe your HD. Correct?

What I'm trying to figure out is the hassle (once done) involved in keeping things updated. As it is now with the USB stick drive, it is fairly painless, and even more so if you have more than 1 stick drive. (Although, I can always use more speed!) I also found that prior to updating, you can save your current image the the HD so you can always go back and restore from it if you're not happy with the update.

Yes, when the image gets updated, you would have to go through the entire process again to update it - but I'm not sure why you would. If the image works to your satisfaction there's no reason to go ahead and update with it.

Not sure about your other questions, sorry. Anyone else care to comment?

Help! - cloudlionhead - 2010-06-14

Hi!

I have read this thread many times but i could find any answers to my question!

I am a noobie with atv abnd linux! On my atv is a atv flash version 4.1.2! Yet i have seen that the crystalubuntu works great with xbmc and crystalhd! I have build my crystal hd instead of the wlancard! But xbmc nightly version is to high to find my crystalhd!

I need a install guide for the crystalubuntu on the internal hard drive! have someone a step by step guide?

I hope for some help

If you want linux on your atv you might want to try the 1st post on this thread.

Otherwise if you just want to get your crystal card working (and I assume you have installed the card and have installed xbmc) you want the 1st post here : http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=69321

I officially give up - Wanyika - 2010-06-15

All is going well, but i am not able playing a HD movie. Not even for 5 seconds.
Yes I see there is progress, but it is all the time buffering. The moment it plays, it is good, but these are just fractions of seconds ending in corrupted frames. Unable to get the sound from the movie, and when choosing the wrong sound specification, it is totally crashing and reboots.

What do I wrong? I am hardwired with the router! I am spending to much time with this, spending more will result in total destruction of this device. it will even not work with a movie on the internal drive. Did I mis some SOP's?

Sorry for the bad English, not used to write it.

No

Update: Sound has been solved. But still is buffering every 5 to 10 seconds

Code:
sudo vol_id /dev/sda6 | grep ID_FS_UUID

Great guide. Unfortunately, this step gave me an "Unknown volume type" error.

I corrected this by doing:

mkswap -c /dev/sda6

Not sure if that was an appropriate step... feel free to comment.

Uploading to Linux/ATV - xbmc old school - 2010-06-15

Is there a FTP client on the minimal image? Data transfer through SSH is painfully slow.

"apt-get install" will install the package into whichever copy of Linux is running (be it the hard disc or a flash drive), so it will remain across reboots.

What kind of server are you using? Some people have reported problems using SMB sharing on SnowLeopard because the SMB support on that server is flawed. Also check how fast your server is delivering the file - a blu-ray rip can go up to 40Mb/sec, so if you're using something like powerline ethernet you might struggle.

Guys
I tried netatalk first, but isn't this an afp server rather than an afp client? In any case with netatalk installed I'm getting mount_afp command not found.

Then I tried afpfs-ng however I'm stumped by the install - I am getting errors when running the "make" command : http://pastebin.com/LcbDpajr

Anybody want to help with this?

thanks
Paul

I had problems using SMB with Time Capsule, the SMB client built in the TC randomly stops to work. There are hundred of reports in the Apple support forum, but the only way at the moment is to downgrade the firmware from 7.4.2 to 7.3.2.
Now is working fine so the problem is not in Snow Leopard but in TC,this problem should involve also Airport Extreme but didn't test.
To downgrade follow this, quick and easy: http://theappleblog.com/2009/05/12/public-safety-advisory-how-to-downgrade-from-time-capsule-7-4-1/
Bad,bad Apple we should ahead not back!

About AFP,i followed many many different tutorials, not result and a devasting headache! Thanks to dafranca and other people here for the help but my linux noobness is too strong i give up and leave the ball to someone more expert.
These are some link,have fun
