Cheapest off the shelf computer with HDMI and 1080p? - webMASTER_P - 2010-11-22

Like the cryptic subject states, I am looking for the cheapest computer that I can get that will have HDMI out and will be able to handle 1080p video playback.

I just purchased the boxee box, and I am pretty disappointed with the way it handles local media. I want to go back to using XBMC, but I don't feel like building an HTPC from scratch.

Acer Revo can be picked up for about $200 and will do everything you need. Basically any Ion based machine will do everything you need.

Which Revo? I see them on newegg, but for $300+

Alot of fixes for Boxe Box should be arriving this week if you can wait.

What kind of fixes though?

My thinking is that I can spend $200 for something like this and have an actual PC connected to my TV.

I think one of these is the cheapest:

Try and find the Revo AR 1600. Looks like it's discontinued though now.

Looks like they got it on Amazon from a reseller. I wonder why Acer no longer offers such a cheap model. I just see the $300+ ones. The 3700 is tempting though, I may have to step up my game.

Good Luck...... - hogfan - 2010-11-22

If you can find at 1600 (even a refurb.) snag it ASAP. I can't find them anywhere. I bought one from Best Computer (reseller on Amazon) yesterday and they shipped it out today. Was a factory refurb in box. It was $198 for the refurb. It appears Acer has discontinued this model and wants us to spend $300+. Most people buying these things are buying them simply for the iON. I don't know why they discontinued the cheaper model when they were selling them like crazy.

Because presumably now people who need an ion machine will simply be shit out of luck if they want to pay less than 300, so they will choke down the extra 100+ dollars, because that's all that's on the market.

I think this is soooo true. There used to be lots of retailers selling the cheap ION nettops. But now its almost worth it to buy a netbook with ion and a screen for cheaper than the equivalent nettop. Serious collusion going on here...

Occasionally I check eBay for the Revo 1600 and see a few pop up for under/around $200. Go for it, if you have an eBay account. These machines are wonderful for the price.
Glad I got mine last year; at the local Best Buy of all places!

I picked up my refurbished 1600 last year from http://shop.revonate.com/ for $135. Looks like they have a few 3610's at the moment.

Well..... - hogfan - 2010-11-23

At $300 - $400 that they now want for an ion netop, you can almost buy better (granted larger) full PC! That was the thing I liked about Acer, good prices and good quality. The problem with the Zotac and Foxconn boxes is that they are barebones and cost $200, so you still have to buy RAM and a HDD or SSD. It ends up being $300 really fast.
