TV library loses files - FreeFrag - 2011-01-20

Hi,

Some files behave strange in my videos library. The folder is set to use TheTvDb as scraper.

When I try to start the file XBMC tells me that it's no longer available and ask me if I want to remove the file from the library. If I do that and then rescan the folder it finds the files and adds them. When I try to play them again it tells me the same thing (no longer available). It's not all files that behave like this but some do.

The HTPC is on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits and XBMC Stable Release: 10.0. The TVseries folder is on another machine and I have a wireless N connection between these machines.

Anyone knows what can cause this? Huh

Cheers
FreeFrag

sounds like your temporarily loosing your network connection. try using a cable instead of wireless and see if the problem persists.

As I said it doesn't happen for all files so that is not the problem.
I have been using the same setup with a software like XBMC (no names mentioned) for 3 years and not had this problem.

WHen it happens, go to a windowed mode and browse to the file in question. See if you can open it from the same location XBMC does. double check this in the file info and check the location xbmc assumes the file is.

Thanks.
I am sure I can browse the files and watch them with MPC or likewise cause I already tested this.
I will check the info though and make sure XBMC has the same location to the files.

the only thing that can cause this is if the files scanned to your library can no longer be found. this includes (file or folder names changed, network connection loss, user access rights).

If your file names were changed, even slightly, then xbmc would not be able to find them but would also rescan them fine.

That statement is not necessarily correct. A temporary outage can give the illusion of this, especially when your network 'comes back' seemingly immediately. This is a fact, as what's happening to you is happening to me, as well. My network drops connection for seconds, and I've received the same message, asking me if I want to remove the affected movie/show. I've seen it occur in a windowed mode, so I know it can happen.

I'm also 'working on the problem', but I believe it may be my D-Link DI-655 router at fault, as I've been reading up on other's problems that are similar.

I didn't rename the files or folders. Yesterday I just tried to start an episode and got the message about removing them from library which I did. Rescanned the folder and they appeared again. Tried to watch the file with the same message appearing again. Did the same thing all over again.

Another season of the same show worked liked a charm. Both seasons are located in the same folder although under different subfolders.

I will give it a try tonight and see if I can figure anything out.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Big Grin

Hope you get this fixed, i know you said you came over from another media center, and if this is your experience so far you've got to be considering going back to it. I can't stress enough that you should stick with xbmc and get this little hiccup solved. you wont regret it. iv often dabbled with other media centers just to play and found they all suck in comparison.

have you checked the debug log of xbmc to see if you could find any information about this? it might lead you/others in the right direction to find the problem

I agree that my statement is not correct in all cases. In my case however I can now for certain say that it is not network related (as in problems with the wireless connection).

I am right now running remote desktop to the HTPC and I can watch episodes from the first season of the show on the remote desktop (although not 100% smooth ofcourse). When I try to open an episode of the other season it tells me it's unavailable and ask I want to remove it. I do this and rescan the folders, scraper finds the episodes and adds them. I try to play them and same message appears. First season still plays just fine.

Yes, I actually didn't uninstall the other media center yet but I won't give up this easy on XBMC. I just love the speed of the UI.
Although the "out-of-the-box everything just works" argument that is often used to XBMC's advantage compared to my old software has proven not fully justfied. Smile

I will check the logs and see if I can find anything. Thanks.

Do you have any .NFO files in the folder that contains the episodes?

If so, try deleting them and re-scanning

No NFO files in that folder.

I was wrong before. The files are in the same folder but the first season is in a subfolder and season nine is not in a subfolder.

Logs showing successful playback and not so successful..

I see some issues - you have some named S#E##, and others named S##E##. I believe they must all be the latter. At the very least, you should clean up your ordering, and locations. Having multiple seasons in folders and stragglers in the root, or vice versa, could be part of the cause of your problem.

Thanks a lot. Big Grin That solved this problem. I just moved them to a subfolder and renamed them.

I fully agree to your statement but to be honest this wasn't a problem for my old MC which also used a scraper based on TheTvDb.com. From what I read, I thought that XBMC would be even more plug-and-play but I guess that isn't always the case.

Once again thanks all. What can be better than a dedicated community Big Grin Now onto next problem....
