Just realized why you are all in a rush to install nitro... DON'T!
Just follow the stuff here http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=699432&postcount=44

Did you do exactly that?

This only applies to the pwnage tools.. and it should be in the instructions somewhere

I saw on the Firecore forum that if you are receiving 1601, you need to make sure you have no ipod, iphone or ipad connected to your computer.

Anyways, using iTunes to restore back to factory defaults, I just had to plug in the usb cable alone. No power cable needed.

Putty initially gave me the same crap. I opened up Terminal on my VM and that worked like a charm.

Ok, anyone still having trouble with jailbreaking the ATV2 via Windows?

I redid the whole process last night. From restoring my ATV2 back to Apple's iOS 4.2.1, the way it would come from the store, to the tethered boot and installing of XBMC.

I jailbroke it using iReb and then tethered boot using the tetheredboot.exe, which are the current tools used for ATV2 jailbreak in Windows.

I got everything working after some initial hiccups related to putting the device into DFU mode. I think this process of entering DFU is what is possibly hanging people up. And the various ways that I see document is actually more complicated than it needs to be.

So since I feel like I have a good handle on the situation, let me know if you guys still require some help and I can help answer it from the Windows side.

I found a couple of different ways and instructions on the internet on how to put the ATV2 into DFU mode.

However, my process changes the usual order around.

1. Put device into DFU mode first, using simple instructions below.

2. Then launch your program. i.e. iReb, tetheredboot, etc...

::HOWTO ENTER DFU MODE::

Easiest way to put the AppleTV 2 device into DFU state...

- Plug ONLY the microB-USB cable into your ATV2 and computer (Power cable, Network cable and HDMI cable does not need to be plugged in at this point)

- Then, immediate press and hold "menu button" AND "play/pause button"

- Release the buttons as soon as you see the blink rate changes

(The change in blinking speed tells you when to let go. It goes from a steady blink to a faster blink. Roughly about 5-6 secs after holding down both buttons.)

- Your device is now in DFU mode

- Now you can run whatever exploit, software and it will automatically detect your device in the DFU state

Let me know if you have better success with my instructions.

Thanks,
-Dazex

This worked like magic. I couldn't figure out what was going on and now I'm almost set. I just seem to be having an issue installing xbmc.

I followed the wiki and using putty I get a few messages that I'm not sure about.

I had the same thing. It ended up working after typing the line which adds that repo in manually. I can't explain why it didn't add the repo from the pasted version of the line, but it didn't.

nismofun,
Looks like a typo on your part. It should be spelled "mirrors"

Code:
echo "deb http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/atv2 ./" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.list

dazex Wrote:nismofun,

got that fixed. Thanks. But now on the apt-get install... I get the following:

Quote:apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
