Regarding the SMB dropouts, they usually happen after restarting the Apple TV. Quit and reopen XBMC should get it working again (at least works for me). Here's the thread: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=94079

EDIT: Confirmation by davilla: http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=728419&postcount=5

One the first page it states "SSA and ASS subtitles do display on hardware decoded videos" it should be they don't display. Any video being fed through the hardware decoder subtitles do not display.

Archive of 1st post for 10.0-4 release. latest release is 10.0-7 - procrastinator - 2011-02-19 23:33

Archive post: release of 10.0-7 pushed out on 19th Feb and 1st post altered accordingly

There has been a new official release of XBMC for iOS/ATV2 please help maintain this list of issues by submitting any corrections or new issues. The updates that have already been made to the list are thanks to the changelog in the link above, and the list of issues/improvements kept by keith for the unofficial nightlies. A snapshot of keith's nightly build issues list from the day of release of the 10.0-4 official build is archived here. HUGE thanks to keith for both nightly builds and keeping on top of what's changed. The list of issues from the original release is archived in this post on the thread.

The following information applies to the second official iOS/ATV2 release (10.0-4) made on 6th Feb. Please see this thread for information regarding the unofficial nightly builds

Playback, video:
  • 1080p file playback is not smooth for all files, but has improved since the first release. Note: At present, though the ATV2 can decode 1080p video, it is limited by frontrow to outputting 720p video. Improvements in this area will focus on achieving smooth playback of 1080p files at 720p output. Though 1080p output may be possible, it is not a priority at the moment. To see if you can really benefit with 1080p output, please consult this chart
  • Hardware decoding is for h264 only. As a result, 720p XviD, WMV and other HD encodings stutter. Standard definition should work fine. (thanks nmat)
  • MMS streams do not work (thanks keith)
  • large MKV files packaged with subtitles in the container can crash XBMC unless subtitles are disabled (thanks candyman2000)
  • There is currently no control over display characteristics, e.g. autoswitching refresh rate 24/50/60 Hz (thanks acidduck)
  • Interlacing is disabled on mpeg2. (maybe more??) No easy short-term fix. (thanks keith)
  • video_ts playback will not work if menus are included in addition to video files (thanks neohusky and this thread)
  • ISO playback does not work

Playback, audio:
  • AC3 Audio can stutter and pause video. Generating Thumbnails is the culprit, go into Settings > Video > File and deselect 'generate thumbnails'. Fix is in mainline, not atv2 branch yet. Also some are experiencing static with this enabled, regardless of Generate Thumbs selected or not. (thanks keith)
  • incorrect downmixing of audio - front channels downmixed to right stereo channel, rear channels downmixed to left stereo channel (thanks nukedeath)
  • volume control and muting do not do anything (thanks Gooki)

Playback, other:
  • SSA and ASS subtitles do not display on hardware decoded videos (thanks Thewolf).
  • Visualiser is not working (thanks keith)

GUI:
  • The performance of XBMC's interface is improved over the original release. It is not clear at the moment if it has been fully optimised, or if there si still room for improvement that warrants this being an "issue" (thanks nmat for original info)
  • Navigation sounds are disabled (thanks nmat)
  • 'Glassy' reflections seen in many of the skins are not working properly as diffusing isn't currently working properly under GLES (thanks TwisTz)
  • does not read folder.jpg or filename.tbn files
  • Screen appears to be incorrectly calibrated on some iPhone and iPads (probably to do with screen rotation - try launching with iDevice orientated in landscape) (thanks jerkychew)

Media/Library:
  • Library scanning / scraping causes xbmc to crash and/or the scraper itself. Turn off 'Generate Thumbnails' under Settings > File Types. (thanks keith
  • Scanning for remote music shares is broken, library does not update (thanks gerner)
  • Picture shares are not working (thanks for reporting gerner, confirmation thread here). Currently thumbnails are loading, but not the full picture (thanks keith)
  • XBMC is known to occasionally fail to connect to SMB shares. This can be remedied with a restart of XBMC (see this thread)

Control:
  • Rolling repeat button presses not working from remote control - i.e. scrolling through menus by holding down a direction button (thanks bwelton - via another thread)
  • Keyboard using an eventclient like XBMC Remote on iPhone doesn't seem to work. (thanks keith)
  • With Bluetooth keyboards, some keys dont work. (Shift-R in library mode wont take to the R's for example) This will require a refactoring so no fix in the short term. (thanks keith)
  • no support for third party remotes. Will be coming in future releases (see this thread)
  • touch scroll gestures not handled by XBMC yet (i.e. ability to flick through lists rather than use scroll bars)

other:
  • Time is incorrect - see here for a fix
  • Last.fm submissions are tempremental (thanks keith)
  • SMB is read-only. Write access is planned for future releases (thanks keith)

I'm not sure how often I will be able to update this first post, but please check the time and date of the last edit to find out how up-to-date the info is. If an update has been made recently but you still can't see what you're looking for in this post then try searching the thread - it may have been reported but not confirmed or backed-up with evidence.

If you know of any more issues, or want to correct any of those I've written above then stick it in a reply. Please ensure there is a link to the original discussion of the issue. The "gold standard" is to have a reply from Davilla saying that it is a "known issue".

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS THREAD AS A TROUBLESHOOTING SECTION OR PLACE TO ASK IF "XYZ" IS WORKING OR NOT. Issues should be discussed elsewhere and confirmed before adding to this thread.

MASSIVE thank you to Davilla, Gimli, and Amet for their hard work on this port.

While In a Movie the Audio and Subtitle settings menu does not work with MKV's the entire menus just seems dead while the video is playing or paused in the background

That's a problem with your setup. Works fine here.

Your response is very vague Dan could you please post in the other thread what exactly you tired and and offer some advice about exactly what settings I have wrong since the menus seems to be totaly dead with MKV's and my ATV2 with XBMC install is fresh out of the box yesterday, I've not really changed many settings and I'm not aware of any setting that would disable the Audio menu while in a movie and as per my post in the other thread stated I could access the audio in movie menu while playing XviD's

- R0MSTER - 2011-02-20 05:15

Problem with Aeon skin, or other skins that supports video in a window.

Select any movie. right click to get the trailer information, right click again to play the trailer. The trailer will starts playing fine, now while it is playing press on the Menu button to go back, the sound is still playing however the trailer will start stuttering maybe it becomes software accelerated, now you will see it top left with stuttering, with debug grid the fps is about 14... Now go back to Settings while the trailer is playing, and choose another skin let's say Carmichael, XBMC will crash
