Unclear Instructions - jiminfrance - 2011-01-25

AppleTV2
The instructions on installing XMBC from various groups throughout the web are vague.

1. It is not clear when installing XBMC with Terminal whether the ATV2 should be connected to the computer or the TV.

2. It does not make clear when one should enter a password.

Could anyone clarify these points for me please? http://forum.xbmc.org/images/smilies2/confused1bb.gif

1. It needs to be connected to the network that your computer is connected to. HDMI>TV / USB>Computer doesn't matter for installing XBMC AFAIK.

2. I'm not sure what you mean here. You would enter a password when prompted at the SSH login, I don't think there's any other stage when it's necessary.

Thank You - jiminfrance - 2011-01-25

Thanks for the info about the connection.
As regards the password, as I have no request for a pw, and all the sites tell you to use alpine as the password, I was wondering exactly where and when one has to enter it.
I'm obviously doing something wrong, as when I enter my IP address as 10.0.2.7, which it shows as being the correct one on my TV screen for ATV2, it just times out. So I never get to the stage where a pw is requested.

That ip doesnt sound right.. double check thru the router that that is the correct ip reported by the DHCP

Let's go back to basics - you are jailbroken, right? When you say you're putting in your IP, where are you putting it? Into some kind of SSH app, like putty?

When I SSHed in first of all, it took a reasonably long time to come up, like 15-20 seconds, but i'm sure you've probably waited that long?

Can you ping it? Does the ATV2 even accept pings?

These should be the one and only instructions.

If they are lacking, please help us maintaining them.

Please read the stickies.. i put in a request to add the deb addition of awkwardtv.list into the wiki...

I got my ATV2 IP address from the TV details on ATV: Settings:General:Network. It gives it as 10.0.2.7 I then tried, in the light of an earlier comment to use Airport's IP address and then Ethernet's IP address. I am using my iMac (mid-2010) with OS X 10.6.6 I get either a timed-out or Connection Refused response. I have tried using ATV2 connected to the iMac and to the TV.

Before I jailbroke my ATV2, I read all of the instructions saw that you have to SSH into the ATV using the IP address. What I did then was assign it a static IP of 192.168.1.29. I made sure that it was connecting and receiving that IP.

When I went to SSH into the device, it was easy.

Sorry to ask, but did you jailbreak your ATV?

Not sure why Jiminfrance did not answer the one question that maybe the root problem for him.

The question for jiminfrance is whether you have jailbreak your ATV2 yet?

We can't really help without him clarifying that he did or not.

Jailbroken or Not? - jiminfrance - 2011-01-31

Well, here's the thing: I'm not sure if I have jailbroken AppleTV2 or not. I have used the Pwnage tool and I have used Season Pass, but when I go to Restore (holding the Option key) on iTunes it connects with Apple and refuses to let me restore. When I ping 10.0.2.7 it gives 10/10 feedback when AppleTV is reconnected to my computer. However, as I said in an earlier posting, when I try and insert this IP address into Xmbc it gives a connection refused message.

OK - couple of thoughts as I recently installed XBMC onto a new Apple TV:

1. The IP address seems unusual -- did you literally copy this from instructions you saw someplace? If so, that's where the error is -- you need enter your *own* Apple TV's IP address (typically starts with 192); you can find this by going into Apple TV Settings / Network (or something like that, can't remember the exact path but it's the last vertical menu on the far right),

2.If you're still having problems, I would recommend you start over fresh.

Do this by:

a. Download the latest ATV2 operating system from Apple (Google to find it),

b. Connect Apple TV to your TV (optional actually) and connect it also via Micro USB cable,

c. Reboot: hold down menu + play/pause button for several seconds, then release -- your Apple TV should reboot, and if it's connected to your TV via HDMI, you should see an image showing you to connect it to iTunes. Meanwhile, in iTunes it will complain that it's in restore mode, and that you need to restore the unit,

c. Do a factory restore using the OS you downloaded in step a,
d. You should now have an Apple TV like you bought from the store,

3. Download the latest version of Seasonpass (0.6.9 I believe) -- this latest version does everything for you automatically, which makes things easier,

4. VERY IMPORTANT: Disconnect power from Apple TV unit, but keep the USB cable connected (to both the unit + your Mac),

5. Make sure iTunes is still open, and launch Seasonpassto -- click 'Create IPSW' -- let it do its thing -- it will automatically download and create a customized IPSW AND run a script that will select it automatically in iTunes -- even though a dialog box will appear in iTunes asking you to find the OS you want to restore the unit with, Seasonpass will find it automatically if you wait just a little bit,

6. Once that is done, you should be jailbroken. Go back to Seasonpass and select the other option to do a tethered boot (instructions will tell you to plug in the power cable),

7. Reinstall XBMC using the link that was mentioned in this thread.

Hopefully this will help with your situation. Good luck --

Private IP addresses - jd2157 - 2011-01-31

There's three ranges of private IPv4 addresses. Most router manufacturers use the 192.168 range in their DHCP server implementations but Apple has chosen to use the 10.0.0 range. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_network

Long story short, he's (probably) using an Apple router, is quoting the correct IP address but isn't jailbroken. Rather than duplicate the instructions here might be better to point at existing instructions:
