Buffering Freezes XBMC - g33kboy - 2011-02-25
I have been running XBMC on my ATV2 for a couple weeks now. Everything works great and smooth, but whenever buffering occurs, it stops at 0% and totally freezes XBMC. Sometimes it will kick back to the menu, but when it does I have no access to the SMB files. I have to reboot my ATV2 using the menu and down button and relaunch, and then everything works great.
The buffering happens randomly every 30 min or so. I am connected wirelessly to a WinXP box where my files are stored. I have tried both greenpois0n and pawnage jailbreaks, made no difference.
Anyone else run into this?

I'm no expert but I think its h264 which has acceleration..mkv is just the container..mp4 is also just the container...although I think davilla said mkv was a better container for atv2 xbmc at this time
I don't have any smb issues...shared on external drive via my imac
maybe try ethernet cable instead of wireless just to be certain that's not the cause?

I also cant understand why some movies are fine in iPad but not working with atv? Is it because of the display resolution?

One thing I did find out with HD movies 720p or 1080p is that it works better if you are wire connected. In addition, if I use UPnP from my mac to my ATV2g everything works fine with no buffering, but if I try SMB I start getting buffering.
This is not the case with my boxeebos. I connected both of my hard drives to my boxee box and I am now streamming to my ATV2g using SMB with no buffering issues, except with 1080p mkv movies wich are over 10g

last night my 720p MKV's were driving me crazy. Constant buffering - whilst others work great.
Also, icefilm HD films seem to constantly buffer despite my 50mb connection. My iPhone and iPad both register a speed test of about 20mb/s in my room where the ATV2 is situated so it cant be the network.

I'm having the same issue with icefilm HD too..
I have a 17 mb connection and still constant buffering....

I also have a wireless connection to atv2 this is a 20mbit so to speed is not the issue.
Some movies. 720p and even 1080p play very well and i don't get buffering.
Other files do get the buffer issue, even .avi with xvid codec of 780 mb.
The problem i think is that atv2 cant handle ALL the codecs good yet.
If i play a movie i found out cause when i hit the fast forward i doesn't go 30 sec ahead but it just hangs. With the movies that dont buffer i just skip 30 seconds ahead and then the movie plays on.

Can you go to the icefilms.info site on your Mac/PC and attempt to stream a video that you know will stutter on ATV2? By this, you can determine if the issue is the server or the Apple TV (In addition to the PC, I would stream once again to ATV2 in order to, as much as possible, eliminate changing external network conditions as a cause for a different result between the 2 systems).

i've just streamed the following 2hour 1080p mkv without any buffering (atv2 is wired, server is an underpowered synology ds209j):
video codec: x264 2 Pass @ L4.1
framerate: 23.976 FPS
bitrate: around 13500 kbps
resolution: 1920x800
audio1: German DTS 1510 kbps
audio2: English DTS 1510 kbps
so that was my final test, i guess i wont get that much files that have a higher bitrate than that one. my atv1 will be sold and i'll get another atv2. that little box is just awesome!

"CABAC / 8 Ref Frames", that is "out of spec" for High@L 4.1 h264 video content.
