I'm gonna be building my bedroom HTPC later this month and I need to know which motherboard:

http://www.crescentelectronics.co.uk/node/387318

or

http://www.crescentelectronics.co.uk/node/323375

Is one better than the other?

it look the same to me. since the 1st one is cheaper, i would go with that!

One is AMD A50M chipset and the other is AMD M1 chipset. I have no idea what difference that makes.

How do I access the BIOS on this? I've tried holding F2 but it doesn't work.

it should be f2 to get into asrock H55M-LE bios. if it doesn't work with htpc connect to hdtv via hdmi, you can try it with vga cable!

On the UK Asus website is shows them both having 'AMD FCH A50 (Hudson M1)'

The only differences appear to be that the Pro has

Expansion Slots

2 x PCI 3.0
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 @X4

USB

ASM Controller:
- 2 x USB 3.0/2.0 ports (@back)
Chipset built-in:
- 12 x USB 2.0/1.1 ports (8@board, 4@back)

Whereas the non pro has-

Expansion Slots

1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 @X4
1 PCIe 2.0 x1
2 x PCI 3.0

USB

14 USB 2.0/1.1 ports (8@board, 6@back)

The pro also includes a CPU fan

chcknbrst1tst,
you need an SSD or a Hard Disk Drive so u can install windows on it....

after that, depends where u want to store your movies...
either buy a SERVER or an extra Hard Disk Drive to put in your HTPC

- chcknbrst1tst - 2011-09-17

I have the ssd which is 64gb Can I install windows 7 on it before i put it in the new htpc. Because the ssd that I bought came with a external hook up box At least that is what I think it is. So I was wondering if I hooked it up to my laptop and added windows 7 on it than installed it in HTPC than booted from ssd if it would load windows 7. Sorry for my stupid questions I know your all rolling your eyes laughing at me lol

Your best installing it on the PC you intend to run it on. Windows will load device drivers for the system at install time. USUALLY you can just move it to another PC, but I've had problems (mostly when moving an install from a Intel based machine to an AMD based machine (or AMD to Intel) where I would BSOD at boot on the second machine.

You're only asking for trouble doing what you're trying to do. No advantage I can think of... Installing Win7 on a SSD takes about 30 minutes, so no time savings to speak of either.

Looks good to me!

the SSD is only to hold your O/S and XBMC

where you'll store your movies its up to you,,,

on a separate mechanical hard drive?

on an external hard drive?

on a server u have?

- WillemB - 2011-09-28

If you want to put a little OCing in the mix maybe go for 1600Mhz memory.

- eskro - 2011-09-28

WillemB Wrote:If you want to put a little OCing in the mix maybe go for 1600Mhz memory.

yeah well, totally useless for HTPC use, aka XBMC,,,
