Stuttering 720p playback - Pummelfee - 2011-03-02

Hi to the forum. Yesterday i got my ATV2 :-) After unpacking it i directly connected it to my Mac Book Pro and jailbreaked it with the latest Greenpois0n release.

So far so good(?).

Then i put it the little black box to the living room and and plugged the HDMI, ethernet, power and audio cable in it. Then i installed (via nitoTV) XBMC. But before that i installed openssh by mistake, because i've clicked the remote a bit to fast...
OK, when XBMC was installed, i rebooted the device and then i added my smb share with all my 720p avi and mkv files on it.
This all went fine to this point.
But then i was quite disappointed - all the 720p avi and mkv files are stuttering totally. I guess, they play with not more than 5 FPS (instead of 50!).
SD stuff is playing fine, with some little dropouts.
However, i went back to the video settings in XBMC and played around with them - with absolutely no luck! The best result i can get, is that the stuttering files play in slow motion with no audio...

My Macbook is connected with 802.11n WiFi and i don't believe that the connection is too slow.

The files i have are recordings form onlinetvrecorder.com
These files all play smooth with a LG BD 370 Player!

I hope someone can help me! :o

Try an ethernet cable to eliminate that possibility first....

Yes, i will do so - but i don't think thats the reason. Yesterday i copied a folder of around 20 GBs in 40 Minutes over the air. A 720p movie is around 3 GBs and plays 90 Minutes... So, from this point of view my WiFi should be fast enough :confused2: I'll try the cable!

What are the 720p .avi/.mkv files encoded in? Are they x264? I have played a number of movies that are x264 and have yet never had a problem, I have though had a few issues with files not encoded with x264.

They are all H264...

What channel is your router on? Are there other Wireless networks in the area using the same channel which could be causing interference issues?

My advice, when troubleshooting, you gotta eliminated and not assume. So, at this point...is the problem with ATV not being able to decode the file smoothly or is the wireless network not able to consistently stream the movie file despite being very fast in file copy over the same link?

So, logically...using an Ethernet connection will quickly take the wireless network out of the equation so you know where to focus.

Also, check out this Tom's Hardware article on how speed is not the only factor. And how wireless routers are not all built the same. As a result, some wireless signals causes a lot of "resends" of packages, causing laggy performance of video streams and such.

I just wired the Mac Book, and with the same result. So the WiFi is OK so far.
I think, my XBMC is broken somehow. Just installed Videomonkey but i cant use it, it says Script Error.

For me and for now XMBC is completely useless - should i reset the whole thing completely and make a new JB?

Personally I would reset everything, re-jailbreak, use the SSH method of XBMC and then try again. That process if only going to take 15/20 mins so will be well worth trying.

Let us know how this turns out.

Just redo everything. Something went wrong along the way. My ATV2-XBMC is running great and has been put into use by the kids since the day XBMC debut on ATV2.

- Pummelfee - 2011-03-04

OK, i've re-done everything and installed xbmc with my terminal over ssh.

But with no luck - the results are the same. Then i had the idea to try the files with the xmbc for OS X on my MacBook Pro. And guess what: the videos are also jerky and stuttering!

Either, XBMC cannot handle recordings from onlinetvrecorder.com in general (but the cheap LG BD 370 does!) or, i don't know...?! :confused2:

Sorry to sound redundant, but are you positive the avi files you are playing are using the H264 codec? Stuttering playback of the DivxHD codec is a documented and current issue which I am also suffering from.

Try UPnP stream instead of SMB. What is your SMB share? NAS drive? Which model?

I have installed Perian on my Mac Book Pro so i can watch almost everything with Quicktime Player. When i open up the file in QT the information Box says:

Format: H.264, MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 48,000 kHz
FPS: 49,99
3,29 GB
4.132,40 kBit/s
1280 x 720 (actual)

On the onlinetvrecorder.com Website they say, that a jailbreaked ATV with XBMC would play all the provided recordings properly!
http://www.onlinetvrecorder.com/?aktion=compatibility
Thats why i bought the black little box!

Furthermore i am frustrated about the videomonkey Plug-In. It just crashes "Script Error" when it loads the content...

I also wonder, why the GUI of XBMC is so jerky and stuttering! On the "Apple-GUI" every Scrolling and all Menus are so smooth... but XBMC just feels like i run it on a 10 year old PC.....

Another bug: when i have used Airplay and then use xbmc, i have to restart the whole device to get Airplay working again!

That all would not be so much frustrating then it actually is for me, if i could find something on Google that could help me.

I dont give up for now..... Would be very appreciating every hint!!
