Aeon MQ2 Vs Aeon65 Vs Aeon Nox - How do they compare? - jamesaevans - 2011-04-19

I'm building my HTPC this weekend and am planning to use XBMC (10.1 “Dharma”) as the front-end with an Aeon based skin.

However, there appears to be several different versions of the Aeon skin available (Aeon MQ2, Aeon65 and Aeon Nox), but I'm not clear on what the differences are between the different versions.

Can anyone please help me out by explaining the differences between these three different Aeon based skins?

Thanks
James

There's a can of worms....

The best suggestion is try them all and see what works best for you. There are so many different aspects to the skins there is no direct way to compare them.

Good Luck and watch the responses fly... Smile

MQ2 is the heaviest resource-wise (though there's a "lite" mode) and most full-featured. Nox is the lightest and simplest. Aeon65 is a bit older and not as well-maintained currently as the other two.

I prefer MQ2 both in terms of aesthetics and features, but they're all good. Smile

Please let's not make this topic a topic of fans.

jamesaevans, there is no better skin, but yes, there is a better skin for you. Wink

Follow the suggestion of stoli, test and decide for yourself which you like best. Everyone has an opinion and personal taste, the good of this forum is just that, has skin for everyone. Nod

Good luck.

I really wish the Aeon family supported extrafanart.

My questoin was how do the various Aeon based skins compare in terms of features, not which is best as I agree that is a subjective question which will be different for different people.

First thing... What is the Hardware of your HTPC?

I'm building a gaming HTPC with the following spec:
- i5 2500K, 8GB DDR3, GTX570, 64GB SSD, Samsung Blu-ray drive

Nox is very good for people with Atom+Ion.
You can go for Aeon MQ2 with no problem.

I´m running Aeon MQ with Shuttle XS35GT (Ion, 1GB RAM, SSD, XBMC-live). Works fluently on medium-settings.

With a HTPC like that you want all the bells and whistles so MQ2 is the one for you. BTW that rig is better then my gaming system...Big Grin

I have an ION and originally tried MQ2 when I first got it. It personally put me off Aeon for a good few months. Recently tried Nox and is soooo fast in comparison. Not knocking MQ2, sure it would be the skin of choice on a high-end system but for lower spec it has to be Nox all the way!

- user321 - 2011-08-24

I wonder if MQ3 will perform better on lower spec hardware?

I recently got an Emachine ER1401 (AMD dual core 1.3Ghz K325 (slightly better than a Revo R3700), 2GB ram, Nvidia 9200 gpu). I'm running Win 7 x64. I'll give Nox, MQ2 and MQ3 a whirl and see how they perform.
