[Linux] XBMCbuntu not detecting NIC?
#1
I am dual booting Windows 7 and XBMCbuntu on a box here. Both are brand new, fresh installs. Even in the installer for XBMCbuntu, it was detecting internet. Internet works 100% fine in windows.

In windows, the network adapter is listed a:
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

Not sure whats steps I should be taking here to try and resolve this.

In XBMCbuntu, bring up a terminal and type:
Code:
lspci | grep -i realtek

Post the output here.
HTPC 1 - Zotac ZBOX ID80U | 4GB RAM | 64GB SSD | Openelec | Confluence
HTPC 2 - Zotac ZBOX ID41U | 4GB RAM | 60GB SSD | Openelec | Confluence
Server - unRAID Server | 3 x 2TB WD Green HDD, 1TB WD Black HDD (Cache) | Sabnzbd | CouchPotato | Sickbeard

Code:
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)

No putty (since no network connectivity) so I had to type it by hand, but that's it.

OK. This should give you information about the link. Do you get a green light off the back of the NIC when the PC is on?

Code:
ethtool eth0
HTPC 1 - Zotac ZBOX ID80U | 4GB RAM | 64GB SSD | Openelec | Confluence
HTPC 2 - Zotac ZBOX ID41U | 4GB RAM | 60GB SSD | Openelec | Confluence

Code:
ethtool eth0

Code:
Settings for et0:
Cannot get device settings: No such device
Cannot get wake-on-lan settings: No such device
Cannot get message level: Not such device
Cannot get link status: No such device
No data available

Amber light is blinking.

et0 is not the same as eth0

exit xbmc and loginto xbmcbuntu desktop and see what the network-manager applet says.

I was not aware there was a desktop you could log into, how do you do that? EDIT: never mind, I figured that out, but I don't see a network-manager applet?

On the XMBCubuntu desktop, at the bottom of the screen you should see 2 arrows, one up, one down, next to the clock.
Left-click this, which will bring up a list of available wireless networks. Click the one you want, enter the password for the connection, and you should then be connected.
XBMCubuntu will remember this setting, so when you log off and back on to XBMC, or reboot your system, you will automatically connect to this wireless network.

and you will also see information about your wired network (eth0).
For wifi I recommend the newly added network-manager. It does not however fix or diagnose network problems.
When in doubt check in the desktop.

This is not there. Also, this isn't a wireless network card, it is wired.

You see the menu panel at the bottom? if not you have an overscan issue.
If you do see the panel, there are not that many icons....one is the nm-applet.

When I browse Synaptic Package Manger, network-manager isn't even installed. Nor can I install it (of course, no internet).

lmao, it's not a overscan issue, NM is not installed.

I also just re downloaded it, hash checked it to the version I downloaded before (they are the same), re burned it, and tried a fresh install. NM is not there. All during the install it is claiming I don't have a internet connection.

EDIT: Network manager is there if I run it off the disc live. All it says is Wired Network, disconnected. Even when I give it a static ip.
