You can use XP for older versions, but as you stated, not for Kodi. You would need XBMC Frodo. But be aware that version is no longer supported by Team XBMC and add-ons will eventually break if not already.

If you want to run XBMC on old hardware, you might want to look into http://openelec.tv/ You might be in luck.
