is this normal. I checked out a bunch of videos on youtube i know to be 1080p streams,
however, when i try themm out on the Pi2 box, i only get 720p max. My connection is close to 20mbs.
Is there a way to troubleshoot this or is this normal?

It is normal. YouTube uses DASH for 1080p. Kodi does not support DASH.

You could try vimeo I suppose, not sure what they stream at.
