H.264 (AVC) in MKV/Matroska containers

i like to give the same answer as i did in this other post (please read it) => http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin....t=20861
and another thread you want to read as it's specific to mkv and h264 is => http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin....t=15771

hello, i might have found a reason to why the mkv/h.264 is dropping frames.
i recently made a thread about my discover:
http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin....l=h.264

i think that the problem has to do with a/v syncing.
the xbox is fully capable of playing (to a certain extent) h.264 encoded movies, since i managed to get 0 framedrops while experimenting with the sound.
i simply screwed the syncing up, the sound was 4-5 seconds behind, and the video was playing flawelessly.

Hello, I am starting a new thread since my post in this thread http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=22743 went unnoticed:

apolon Wrote:Hello!

I am expperiencing some similar problems as takitjai with mkv files. They freeze, go in slow motion and on the attempt of rewinding or fast-forwarding the playback is stoped. However in my case I suppose it is not the matter of the content but the container itself.

I am trying to watch video files of this specification:
Video: x264
Audio: AAC
Frame Rate: 29.97 fps
Resolution: 512x384
Aspect Ratio: 4:3

Although it is a widely discussed x264 kind of file, the resolution is not high and according to this table:
http://xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.ph...esolutions
it should play fine.

I wouldn't bring this out at all if I didn't check - the SAME content put in mp4 container does not freeze and allows to be rewinded or fast-forwarded, in other words plays fine.

I use XBMC from 10.10.2006 (that's halfway beetween 2.0 an 2.0.1). Was the mkv support modified in some way since 10.10.2006? Would upgrading do any help in this matter?

I would appreciate any help and guidance.

Since that post I have upgraded anyway to xbmc from 23.11.2006 and nothing has changed. Same content put in mp4 plays fine, in mkv causes problems.

Could someone please share some thoughts?

aac is hard to decode and h264 is hard to decode, i still think you are hitting performance limit on the xbox. some options used for encoding add alot more complexity, resolution is not everything.

Yes, I understand all this, but how would you address this:
"the SAME content put in mp4 container does not freeze and allows to be rewinded or fast-forwarded, in other words plays fine"

??

This is the thing that is confusing me. If the problems were with the xbox processing power wouldn't the same content put in mp4 also cause problems?

missed that. could you provide two samples with the same video/audio but in different containers mkv and something else that works.

I can confirm the Matroska compatibility problems apolon is having. The workaround I'm using, is the following:

- Use only 1 B-frame.
- Do not use B-pyramid.

With these settings the encode will play without problems. Fast forward and fast rewind does also work, but after using it, the video needs some time (about 2 seconds) to play fine again.

i have exactly the same problems as mention by apolon & Rabomil
i have to convert the mkv to mp4 format before it can be view properly by xbmc 2.0
so it got nothing to do with xbox processing power

searching thru the forum i notice that this bug have already been brought up as far as march 2006 by BlueRadical
