Is there any way from a Linux server I can put up a message on the display saying some event has occurred ?
Or may be some command line mechanism to allow a picture or even a video to be played.
Like windows playto but from a Linux command line.

This could be really useful if possible.
For example..
You have a new email
Your dinner is ready
The house is on fire
Bring me up another beer.

etc

all that is possible already for a long time. The up to date method to do this is via the json interface.
