Ok so i am running windows 7, I have my computer hooked up through the HDMI out on my ati hd 4550 to the sound bar, then to the tv. I have noticed some of the options lead to an error where the device is not initialized or something of that nature. so I am wondering what the optimal setting in XBMC would be for using this setup.

some files seem to work perfectly, while others cause the error and i have to switch to different audio options.

You will have to go to SETTINGS->SYSTEMS->AUDIO OUTPUT
Make appropriate selection in
AUDIO OUTPUT (Analog / Digital)
-DOLBY DIGITAL CAPABLE RECEIVER radio button
-DTS CAPABLE RECEIVER radio button
AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE (in your case select SONY soundbar)
DOWNMIX MULITCHANNEL AUDIO TO STEREO radio button
The above settings will apply to ALL your playback.
Play with the above settings if something does'nt work.
