Continual freezing and remote losing connection
#46
Okay, I don't have the visualizations running when this happens, can be in the song menu within my library and it happens...maybe it's an issue with aeon nox?...

Swap the cable for a test :-(

Thanks!...kind of a head scratcher, though. I have a brand new 2TB HD where I transferred my music, movie, photo, etc. files to the media center (in a swappable drive bay). Only cables are an ethernet cable and power cord. Strange, b/c the media center works fine except for this problem with certain music files

update: Well, I reconnected the external hard drive that contains all of my media files before I transferred them to the 2tb drive in my swappable bay. the file in question works fine. guess it's the drive so I'll try re-copying the files. Can I try to repair this drive since xbmc itself seems to work fine...also is there some code that will mount the external drive with each power-up of the xbmc system?

The hard disk is damaged. Don't use it anymore. Exchange it.

For auto mounting consider the ubuntu wiki

ok...I'm currently doing a check for bad blocks on the drive...looks like I'll have to start all over from scratch to install the whole thing!?...fantastic. Based on one of your earlier comments about the ubuntu version being old, should I download something different when I have a new hard drive? I used the latest xbmcbuntu build from the official site: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/releases/XBMCbuntu/.

You want to only use xbmc? or you also need a desktop?

If a desktop is need, install "Lubuntu".

And report back when this is running.

using only xbmc at the moment but built the media center with expansion capability in mind for the future if desired...If I just do the simplest thing (xbmcbuntu) am I going to have to go through all that to get the right drivers installed/pulseaudio disabled, etc. again?

You need a newer distribution with a brand new kernel.

I would suggest, that you use Lubuntu Saucy - not the Ubuntu one, the L one. And afterwards just whipe pulseaudio and install the packages I pointed you to. After you have done this, report back - so we can install the 12.3 preFrodo testing packages for you.

ok, have to work on exchanging the hard drive since I bought it off Ebay if it's damaged...bought it back in May Sad...btw, this one, right? (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/GetLubuntu)

Use this: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releas...-amd64.iso

After installation:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio libasound2-plugins
sudo apt-get install libva1 libva-intel-vaapi-driver vainfo
sudo reboot

Next we install xbmc
Code:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:wsnipex/xbmc-prestable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc xbmc-bin pastebinit
sudo apt-get upgrade

Now you can choose the xbmc session in the login menu. Do the other settings as I adviced you before and post me:

Code:
dpkg -l |grep xbmc | pastebinit
dpkg -l |grep pulseaudio | pastebinit
DISPLAY=:0 vainfo | pastebinit

That's it

ok, finally replaced the hard drive and everything looks good on the install...

davismc@davismc:~$ dpkg -l |grep pulseaudio | pastebinit

2 problems:
1) can't seem to add any media files or repositories (e.g. Fusion)--xbmc is connected but states either connection timed out or network not connected
2) I wanted to boot into xbmc splash screen as before and right to xbmc...saw a post on auto starting xbmc but won't let me change the etc and usr folders (read-only).

Access to those directories (not folders!!) is usually via the root user only. sun whathever command you are runnig prefixed by sudo, eg

Code:
sudo nano -w /etc/whateverfile

PS no help for fusion here!

ok, I don't need specific help with fusion, just seems to be a network issue that I didn't have before. Didn't know if with the new install I had to set up anything differently...also, visualizations for music look wonky...most seem only to use top half of the screen...

I would just set up some directories in your home directory. There is probably a subdirectory called Videos anyway. ~/ is your home directory so that is ~/Videos.

Put directories under that for Movies and TV, like

~/Videos/Movies
~/Videos/TV

Add them separately as Movies and TV need different scrapers.

Then add your media according to the naming conventions in the wiki. I have found the best way to be to follow these examples.

~/Videos/Movies/Avatar (2009)/Avatar (2009).mkv
~/Videos/TV/The Walking Dead/Season 1/The Walking Dead S01E01 Days Gone Bye.mkv

Cool got it. Fixed the network issues. Any idea about the visualizations only taking up the top half of the screen?
