When you get the question of replace any configuration file during update, choose "Keep". IE DON'T replace!
If that doesn't work, you can also try the guide and skip Point #9. Then the system files will be exactly as from XBMC-Live 10.1 (Dharma).

Thank you very much!!! I am completely helpless with ubuntu and had been trying to figure out the dreaded "audio failing to initialize"...this worked perfectly. The only issue i'm having is that i can't change skins. it downloads and appears to be enabled but the screen just blinks when trying to change to it and stays in confluence. oh well...i can live it for now. Thanks again!!

Just upgraded as had sound issues from a fresh install so rolled back to 10.1 and used your guide. Worked first time great....Only one problem I have is that I use aeon nox and in the xbmc.org skin downloads it still shows as an old version wheras the newer version isnt listed. Any ideas. I uninstalled the aeon nox I was using before eden update but cant re-install.A little bit of help (could) go a long way here.

All done found this if anybody has issues

Delete addons15.db from your userdata/databases/ folder

I followed your directions completely but after apt-get upgrade a blue window popped up, I said replace files. after than during the next rebooot instead of the xbmc splace i have a purple screen that says ubuntu 10-04 then nforce 2 smbus error. error probing smb2. any tips?

also i ran into no other errors in any part of the installation. Even said XBMC built successfully.

This is the screen that asks to to update GRUB configuration file. I'm at that stage now, but I'll chose to keep my local copy!

Something went screwy when I followed this... somehow my OpenGL went missing. So, I got an error saying missing GL.

Anyway, I reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers - and it's all now built OK.

I've not done the final step as yet... a bit nervous Smile

Is there a way of backing up the existing XBMC installation before I do the final step? So, if it doesn't go OK I can just revert back to the existing 10.1?

Thanks for the guide by the way.

I'm trying to update my live USB stick install. When I get to the make -j4 step I get this...

collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [xbmc.bin] Error 1

then trying the next step I get this...

Copying XBMC binary to /usr/lib/xbmc/xbmc.bin
install: cannot stat `xbmc.bin': No such file or directory
make: *** [install-binaries] Error 1

I ran make again without the -j4 argument and I didn't fine any error messages.

Any ideas about what is causing this, or how I can go forward?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Thanks for this. Followed the instructions and appears to have installed ... any reason though that in the Hardware info about XBMMC it says "XBMC 12.0 APLHA1" rather than 11.0?

Mine is also displaying the same "XBMC 12.0 ALPHA1" as github sources are constantly changing https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc
I was able to compile/install XBMC 11.0 stable release from source http://mirrors.xbmc.org/releases/source/...1.0.tar.gz using the same instructions but have since gone back to using github exclusively
