OpenELEC Testbuilds for RaspberryPi
if i follow these steps: does the bootup perform a copy of STORAGE to usb automatically? or how does it work? i don't see a step where i copy the storage to usb...?

No, it doesn't. This will simply create a new STORAGE partition (as if you were doing a new Openelec installation).

If you want to keep your configuration, DB, etc, you will need to copy it manually (mostly .xbmc userdata folder should be enough).
(2013-01-22, 16:59)FattyMcDirty Wrote: and how do i properly install this, with SYSTEM on SD and the rest on the thumb drive? is there any tutorial? (preferrably for windows?)
Here's the steps I used to migrate my storage from SD to USB on Windows: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1288945

Are you aware of any problem with ASS subtitles ?
Often, when watching the 2nd episode of a tv show (or even the first) the text becore unreadable (characters are just squares) and XBMC become really unstable resulting in being very slow or freezing.
Also, seems that information layer become invisible (or are hidden under the video).
Happened with 99.1, Rbej-version-r19012013 and fresh r13052
Seems that there isn't any interesting information in the logs but: http://alex131089.info/OpenElec/log-1970....36.11.zip
Edit: it's random and with, I think, simple sub titles, like http://alex131089.info/OpenElec/2x01%20-...%20101.ass
My new custom build.

Using 6bc259fb5c (ie. r12975) - I'm still seeing occasional freezes followed by reboots. Again try a few TMZ streams and you should experience a reboot in the first 2-3 minutes if not try a different link.
I'm still seeing LOTS of random'ish freezes followed by reboots (using r13052) - on one occasion the freeze didn't trigger a reboot and I had to power cycle; it has occurred while streaming from TMZ, CBSnews, TED, etc. This is on a vanilla Rpi 256 with no modifications, etc. The stream would work for anywhere between 3-10 minutes and then would freeze - note that this doesn't happen _all_ the time but it is occurs more than 50% of the time making it rather annoying.

When a freeze occurs which triggers a reboot one's position is lost within the stream (isn't that a bug ?); shouldn't one's position (ie. time within a particular video) be remembered if the stream is stopped for any reason including errors ?

In any regard, is no one else seeing these freezes/reboots Huh

EDIT ---
Here are a couple of debug files which ended-up with a freeze/reboot each,
reboot1.log 503.15 KB http://a4mqui.dl4free.com/en/
reboot2.log 568.91 KB http://gs71m9.dl4free.com/en/

I then disabled CEC (to get rid of its debug messages) and here are more reboots,
reboot3.log 326.88 KB http://5d9gr2.1fichier.com/en/
reboot4.log 164.99 KB http://6ktwkq.1fichier.com/en/
reboot5.log 276.27 KB http://yc54z9.1fichier.com/en/ (zeroconf off)
one question: using the standard skin now... it's running pretty nice with your help, storage is now on USB, BUT: the artwork, like dvd cases etc... ya.. kinda "low res" - is this intended to be so? can i load them in high-res somehow?

Yes, 256 Mb RPi.

I do not stream from plugins... all my media comes from my unraid server. When my unit freezes, it rarely ever triggers a reboot. My issues usually occur after about an hour and a half to 2 hours of playback.
and another thing: compared to openelec on my htpc, the hdmi output of the rpi seems significantly brighter and not as sharp... does that sound familiar? is there any way to improve this? got it running through hdmi and in 1080p...

i REALLY hope i'm not getting those freezes with the rpi cause THIS is the reason why i dumped my htpc.... random non-reproducable freezes just got ne freakin' out while watching my tv series.... maybe its a general xbmc issue? i tried different sources... smb, ftp and now nfs... all got random reboots with my openelec htpc...

Well, there is no such thing as random, we (as users) need to understand how to debug this and what debug info needs to be conveyed upstream to the developers (both xbmc and/or openelec) for them to make sense of what is happening. I think someone needs to take the leadership in putting together a wiki (or similar) that details what users can do and how best to report errors/anomalies, etc that are of value to the developers/coders/hackers. In short, we need a bit of guidance to be more helpful/useful.

Just my $0.02's worth...

I concur. The blacks aren't black but grey compared to other HDMI inputs on my LCD TV. Does a value need changing? I'd rather fix it at the Pi/XBMC level rather than messing with settings on my TV.

Change *res settings and delete cache:

All the steps you gotten with Linux and formatting a Linux partition is completely unnessesary.
The SYSTEM partitition can even run fine from USB all from windows in 15 mins!

Find a image named RPi__2.99.1_XGB_SDCARD where the X fits your USB stick size here: http://46.38.241.69/sparky0815-rpi/ and unzip it I prefer winrar, 7zip is free though.

Instead of writing the image to a sdcard with win32imager simply write it to a USB stick.
Format a SDcard with minimum 16MB as fat label it BOOT or another choice by you.
Plug the USB stick and the SDcard into the computer.
Now copy the following files from the USB stick and onto the SDcard:
Code:
bootcode.bin, cmdline.txt, config.txt,
fixup.dat, kernel.img, LICENCE.broadcom,
openelec.ico, README.md, start.elf
Basically everything but the large SYSTEM file.
After that pull the USB stick out from the computer to avoid editing the wrong files just set it a side.

On the sdcard open the file cmdline.txt in notepad and change the following line:
Code:
boot=/dev/mmcblk0p1  disk=/dev/mmcblk0p2  ssh  quiet
Into:
Code:
boot=/dev/sda1  disk=/dev/sda2  ssh  quiet
And save the file.

Now plug the USB stick and the SDcard into your raspberry pi. Power it up and enjoy!

Ps. I found that there is a bug on he's images making all OE plugins appear as disabled to fix this delete /storage/.xmbc/userdata/Database/addons15.db and reboot. (you can also use a image from Chris Swan (thestateofme) but then you need a gparted live cd/stick to expand the storage partition afterwards)

My experience though is the other way around I run 1050/500/500 static (force_turbo=1) without any problems on a class 10 sdcard 24/7 allways on never crashes.
If I use the USB stick method I have to clock it down or use a higher over_voltage setting because the USB stick and the fancy light draws to much power. (yeah I know all about warranty IMHO people should be more worried about the sdcard slot and the capacitor. Heh)
Also it might be the USB sticks that I have but the transfer rates was basically half of the sd card.

What did you use to benchmark them? I've benched my SD and USB on my PC with CrystalDiskMark, so I know what they can achieve but the results might be quite different on the Pi.
