Hi! Was looking at buying an Intel NUC as an XBMC box, but this (i3 version) is looking much better. Finally a cheap and powerful fanless box.

cpu (all Haswell, 65W):
- Intel Celeron 2955U (2C/2T 1.4GHz 2MB L3), fanless
- Intel Core i3-4010U (2C/4T 1.7GHz 3MB L3), fanless
- Intel Core i7-4600U (2C/4T 2.1/3.3GHz 4MB L3)

gpu:
- Celeron: Intel HD (200/1000MHz)
- Core i3: Intel HD 4400 (200/1000MHz)
- Core i7: Intel HD 4400 (200/1100MHz)

ram: 2GB/4GB configs, 2 x DDR3 SO-DIMM Slots
storage: 16GB M.2 SSD + 100GB Google Drive for 2 years
lan: 10/100/1000 Ethernet
wifi: dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n, BT 4.0

connectors:
- SD card reader
- 4 x USB 3.0
- 1 x HDMI
- 1 x DisplayPort
- 1 x Audio Jack (mic-in/speaker out)

starting at $179 in March

Given that it is made by asus, I am very hopeful that the hardware could support XBMC

This is perfect XBMC machine, only a little more than the crappy cubox I paid for but have not even received a shipping notification email...

will sell the cubox asap and get this espicially if this gets XBMC support and I thinnk why wouldn't it?

It's an intel chip, of course XBMC will run on it. Any x86 variant of XBMC will run on it. It does look very appealing but maybe overkill at $179. I think the sweet spot for XBMC clients is around $100 IMO

Way way way cheaper than the NUC and plenty powerful for XBMC. This is fantastic!
Living Room: ASUS Chromebox / OpeneElec 5 / Kodi 14.2
Bedroom: Amazon FireTV Stick / Kodi 14.2
Home Office: Amazon FireTV Stick / Kodi 14.2
Windows Server: Intel Core i3-2100T / 8GB Ram / 48TB / MySQL / StableBit DrivePool on Server 2012 R2 Standard

Overkill if working on locally stored files, makes a lot of difference on Addons like 1channel and Navi-X and also media scanning and browsing huge collection of music

Want this. Is the low end version enough to play 1080p hi10p content smoothly in software?

Keep in mind $179 is the entry point price, for the Celeron version. More expensive than the $128 BayTrail Celeron NUM (dn2820fyk), although the Asus comes with 2GB ram and 16GB SSD.

I'm mostly thinking about the Celeron version. If it will play back smoothly in software (hi10p h.264 1080p30), then I'd rather go with that.

Only 16 GB, though that's more than enough for OpenElec or a small Linux distro running Plex. I'm assuming the HDD can be replaced since it's using an M.2 SSD such as this one http://ark.intel.com/products/77948/Inte...s-25nm-MLC Hopefully the combined audio/mic jack is S/PDIF. Considering the price and specs, it sounds like it would make a terrific little HTPC.

Quote:ASUS' Chromebox comes with a 16GB M.2 SSD, and dual-band 802.11n wireless all for a price starting at $179. Google will throw in 100GB of space on Google Drive for 2 years to make up for the limited internal storage.

The box itself is a little bigger than Intel's Haswell NUC, but we're still talking about an extremely small form factor computer. ASUS will ship all units with a VESA mount as well. You can expect availability sometime in March.
