Asus Chromebox announcement

that looks good to me, I'll reset my ChromeBox and verify everything here. Need to backup my SteamOS install first, heh

Edit: just reset my ChromeBox, then installed OpenELEC in a dual boot setup using options 1 and 2 from the script, no issues.

Any insight on how you installed SteamOS? That looks appealing Smile thank you!
I suffer from pops in the sound usinge Openelec Beta 7 on the Chromebox. Also I run into artefacts after watching live tv (both SD MPEG 2 and HD mpeg4) over 35 minutes. It seems some buffers start to overflow. Anyone else facing sound and video issues using the chromebox?

do device prep, set boot flags to short/legacy, install SteamOS from USB/SD (just like you would for OpenELEC in standalone mode). The latest beta ISO has legacy BIOS support. I did have some issues with larger/faster USB sticks (common issue apparently) and ended up installing from an old 4GB SDHC card.

update to the official 4.0.0 release and let's go from there
What happened to the old, manual steps on the wiki...?

Can't remember the steps to boot from a USB stick, if someone could prompt me please...? Want to move from Chrubuntu dual boot to Openelec only.

Never mind, got it!
For anyone interested the Lenovo N5901 mini wireless keyboard/mouse remote will allow you to dual boot the machine...using CTRL-U or CTRL-D before legacy bios.
Anyone getting video pauses? I watched several videos tonight that played for 10m then the picture froze. The audio kept playing. I could not end the video and had to unplug the box.

I'm using an Asus Chromebox, newest Gotham, newest openelec, direct boot (not dual os). I noticed the box freeze a few other times while playing a vid and navigating the menus at the same time.

Is the a device issue? I thought maybe file error, but it played fine once I reloaded it. I'm playing off a 2tb wd passport plugged in.

Ideas? I had this issue with Ouya, but it was all files from many types of devices, and they just wouldn't play at all. Am I missing a song somewhere? All works fine on my junktastic laptop, however.
I am having the same issue with kswapd taking a CPU 100% with 2G of RAM, I have been able to mititgate the issue a little bit by creating a file in /etc/sysctl.d/

/etc/sysctl.d/swappiness.conf

vm.swappiness = 0

but it comes back every once in a while...

i would really like to be able to add a swapfile in /storage/.cache but openelec does not have swapon included... why have mkswap if i can not turn on swap.... swapy swap swap Tongue

is there anyway to make a swap partition?
sounds like a question best asked on the OpenELEC forums or IRC channel

Happened to me a couple times with a movie just last night. I haven't experienced it with other files yet though. I hope it is an Openelec issue and not a hardware issue.
Hello to all, been lurking on this thread from day 1, want to get one of these boxes but they ain't here in the UK yet.

Has anyone thought about putting android on one of these things. Some googling shows that android has been hacked onto certain chromebooks, I wondered if there was any reason why you can't do this on the Asus?

Great work getting this box XBMC-ready.

would appreciate any input from Ubuntu users as to tweaks etc I can integrate into the install. Right now, it auto-installs kernel 3.14.1 with the MCE remote fix and XBMC 13.0 stable.

Just got a Chromebox today from Fry's here in Silicon Valley. Its now running 13.0 with dual boot to chrome os. Seems to work pretty well so far.
need to move to the HT and test out the bit streaming and my IR receiver.

Thanks for all your work.....

I too am also seeing this 100% cpu issue when idle it seems.

dual booting Ubuntu or OpenELEC? 100% CPU on one core or both?

No idea if this could work on the chromebox, would be cool to know either way Smile

I tried android-x86 in live mode, installed some apps from fdroid just to test out and they all loaded up and executed.
I then tried xbmc-13 and the xbmc daily from 05/09 and they installed, but they immediately exited with an error of
xbmc has stopped working. I tried the iso's from the following.

android-x86-4.4-RC1.iso:
http://www.android-x86.org/download
android_x86-4.4.iso:
http://www.reddit.com/r/chrubuntu/commen...for_c720p/

You can run android on the chromebox, but these iso's don't have the arm translation layer that intel's build does.
So you'll only be able to run x86 apks. Also if you let android go to the lockscreen and idle, the fan in the chromebox
will ramp up to full speed and sound like a grinder ginding something. This has been the only time I have ever heard
the fan this loud before and not even in Xubuntu playing Hi10p anime maxing out most of both the cores.
