Crap. I thought I posted what I found out, but it's gone.
I renamed the ~/Library/Application Support/Kodi/ directory and it starts up fine, but of course my library is gonzo.
I went back to 14.2 and everything is OK.
That makes me wonder if there is an issue with the preferences and library if you try to upgrade directly from 14.2 to 16.1 without ever going through 15.
Anyway, for now I'm running 14.2 and it's time to watch a movie. I may download 16.1 again tomorrow if I feel motivated to do so. In the meanwhile, does this info give you any idea what might be happening?

We never tested an upgrade between 2 major releases or more. You should export your library to xml, then remove the kodi folder, upgrade and import the library back. That should work. You need to setup your addons afterwards, but its like with windows - do it from scratch if you want to have a chance that it works.

The Kodi 17 beta 3 lasted nightly is also crashing me in Os sierra 10.12.
But i can install it fine in the Guest Account.
Ok found it its a common solution...
uninstall / move to trash any previous kodi version
Open finder
Top menu > go > press alt > library > application support > kodi file > remove all to trash > empty trash
Install the nightly version.
