Moving from Phenom X3 to Sempron 140
#1
I had relegated my previous 'main' pc to a W7 server (shows & movies & SABNZDB & SickBear & Ember). It runs 24/7.

It has an AMD Phenom X3 8450 (95W) on a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H board.

I want to reduce energy consumption, but don't want to do it, if it makes no financial sense. ( purchase cost / performance)

I would be changing it for an AMD Sempron 140 Sargas on the same board.

I currently run 3 drives on it.

The Sempron chip is only $38, so it is not a big cost. Will the performance suffer much ?

If you do not use it for CPU intensive tasks (encoding, gaming, etc) and have a decent enough GPU for HD playback, then you should not notice much of a performance decrease. You may find the GUI is not as snappy, and it takes slightly longer to get going, but for use as a HTPC, you should have no significant issues.

I didnt recommend any single core CPU. I did try Sempron 140 with GeForce GT220. HD playback is oke but very bad GUI response. Athlon x2 240 or 245 would be fine.

Just to be really clear though, I am using this as a server, not an HTPC box.

So, if I am not using it for graphics, will it be ok ? Will navigation be slow ? I have to be able to navigate through SABNZDB, Sickbeard and Ember without having to wait upon click.
Also, file moving and copying should not take an undue amount of time .

Any thoughts ?
