The iPhone 4 and 3GS have the same power as the ATV2. Jezz's touch skin is very usable on an iPhone. I use XBMC on my iPhone 4 all the time.

Just to be clear, you need to be jailbroken.

On a side note, does any body know if xbmc on the iphone has a "tv out" option when streaming? Plex has this and makes the iphone a nice wiresless streamer to tv.

having an iPhone and not jailbreaking it? I.. I don't understand...

As for TV out, XBMC for iOS does not support the native video out APIs yet. You can mirror the display, but it's at non "Retina" resolution (another feature waiting to happen, but it might be a while since most people will use XBMC on an ATV2 and iPad over an iPhone). I'll be honest... it's not pretty. But give it time; there's a lot of various work to be done and only so many hours in the day. Given that A5 SoC iOS devices can output 1080 (iPhone 4 with the A4 can do 720), I'm sure we'll see native video output added sometime in the near future.

Once it happens it will be basically a portable ATV2 that one has on them all the time. It will be very awesome.

I know. Shame on me. But there really hasnt been anything for me to justify bothering jailbreaking. I was thinking about doing it for xbmc but your review of it nixed that idea. Smile

I've got XBMC installed on my iPad 2 and it's working great. But what I'm looking for is the ablility to watch my movies while I'm not at home. I would like to be able to use my PC at home to transcode the video to a 3G friendly bitrate to stream to my iPhone or iPad.

Maybe now that Boxee has their app someone will be kind enough to hook us XBMC users up too Big Grin

I use AirPlayer on my iPhone 4. It's a UPNP client, which can see XBMC on my ATV2 provided XBMC has UPNP configured under the network settings.

It plays any file, (without converting) but struggles on large DivX or HD files. It's probably fine on the iPad 2/ 4S with the 'multiple threads' option on.

The nice thing is that XBMC serves up the scraped episode names, unlike my UPNP server on my NAS which is obviously just the file names.

If I forward port 55154 on my router to my ATV2, I can get access to it externally too (it tells you how to do this in the app).

That's close to what I was looking for, but won't work over 3G since the data won't be able to keep up with streaming an MKV over the internet. The video needs to be transcoded on the fly while streaming.

Question about using XBMC in this manor on the iphone. In order to sync your DBs like the op was originally questioning, you'd have to be using MySQL DB right? But that doesn't sync the fan art. How do you handle that? Other OS's you can sync the thumbs using nfs / samba / dropbox or myriad other ways, but can this be done on the iPhone / iPad?

We've had some hacks to get it to work in the past (such as path subs) but now in nightly builds (pre-v12) you can sync fan art with MySQL.

You can make easy links to the XBMC wiki using double brackets around words: [[debug log]] = debug log, [[Add-on:YouTube]] = Add-on:YouTube, [[Adding videos to the library]] = Adding videos to the library, [[userdata]] = userdata, etc
