How "full" of an OS is live? What's best Linux for AMD HTPC otherwise?

Hi all,

I'm about to stick my old SSD in to my HTPC and thought it's a good opportunity to update everything. It's currently running Ubuntu 10.10 and a nightly build of XBMC from a few months back. I've been hesitant to update anything because it took me several days and a few OS re-installs to get hardware acceleration working nicely with my AMD graphics card.

So when I install everything new and fresh on to my SSD I need:

* An OS which can launch / build arbitrary applications (have several party games and it's nice to web browse in the living room)
* Hardware acceleration working in XBMC with my AMD graphics card

Is Live capable or is it just locked in to the XBMC application? What's the best OS you would recommend? My technical skills only go as far as being pretty handy with bash scripts and help forums though.
