I have an usb ir receiver from HP and it works perfect for my xbmc box. This receiver came with an IR blaster cable.
I would like to use the IR blaster to control my settopbox, but I can't find how to set this up.
Is this possible to use, do I need software on the xbmc box, if it works does it work when the xbmc box is in sleep mode?

I don't really know an answer, however I know lirc can be programmed as an ir receiver as wel as an ir transmitter. You can investigate that part of lirc to start with.
