I have found 2 skins that I want to checkout. So I copied them to
~/Library/Application Support/Xbmc/addons. They are in a folder "skin.xxx & skin.yyy". just like all th other skins.

However I see no option to select them although all the others are selectable. How to do that?

Location looks about right. What skins are they? Are they XBMC 10 compatible? They should, at least, have an addon.xml within each skin.xxx directory, otherwise they won't show up.

The skins were apparently quite old and incompatible. So they did not work.
