Entry-Level unRAID Server Build
I found one at my local Maplins when I went to buy something totally unrelated.

Looks like this but without the eSATA ports:
http://www.stlab-sg.com/IO/PCI-SATA-2-CH...l-SPEC.htm

It's only 150MB/Sec. which I think equates to 1.5Gb/s. Is this correct?

Is there any particular configuration when using slower SATA ports?

hmm....

they didn't had SATA-II cards?

The one you linked on amazon is only 1.5Gb/s.

Expensive but should work:

Would give me a final number of 20 SATA ports with the other cards.

Lol, SATA 2 on a PCI bus.

A PCI bus has JUST enough bandwidth to cover TWO Sata 1 drives. No more. That card's price is high because it has NCQ (Native Command Queuing), not because it is a magic PCI card that gets past these limits.

Sata 1 is fine for media use.

Nice. Is there any configuration I shouldn't use with SATA I on unRAID, say as parity or cache for example (not that I would).

I wouldn't put either parity or cache drives on a PCI bus. In fact, I wouldn't put them on anything other than the mobo's native ports. Everything else it doesn't matter.

Some guy on Craigslist is selling this Thermaltake Xaser II case for $20 bucks. How many drives do you think I could squeeze in there and do you think it's a good value? It's never been used, but does not come with a power supply. Specs say it has (4) Internal 3.5" bays, (2) 3.5" external bays, and (4) 5.25" bays. I'm a bit confused on how many 3.5" Hdd's you can fit in the 5.25" bays.

Specs per Thermaltake's Website

Those 5.25" drive cages look unique. Like they are hot-swap style slide out cages for optical drives or something. I'm not sure if you can do anything more than get an adaptor for each one and put one HD per drive slot.

Other wise it looks like a case with lots of cooling options, which is good.

(4) Internal 3.5" bays = 4 Drives
(2) 3.5" external bays = 2 Drives
(4) 5.25" bays = 4 Drives + 1 Drive using this --> http://ow.ly/1ucB2F

so lets say --> TOTAL --> 11 drives

eskro,

I just posted my unRAID build which is based entirely off of your recommended build on this thread. It's still awaiting mod approval but looking forward to having you check it out. There were quite a few challenges since it was my first full PC build, but I think it could be a great step-by-step guide for someone who is just starting.

So far it is up and running... I am just trying to figure out how to install unmenu.

I used this guide, it explains how to install unmenu:

Thanks man. That's an excellent guide. I came across it not long ago, but couldn't find it yesterday. It really makes the unRAID software config easy. Do you know if there is a good guide similar to this one on how to setup Sickbeard, SAB, and CP on unRAID?

There is but now but now scripts for automatically installing SAB, Sickbeard and CP are included with Unmenu (which you should install anyway) so its even easier.

In terms of configuring follow ainer's instructions.

If you use a cache drive with unraid point your download scripts.
