Is there an option to play the next video file automatically or is it a case of creating a playlist? Is there maybe a command to skip to the next file should I want to skip through a playlist?

I would use the play all feature but I often find I want to watch certain videos in a folder but not them all!

Any help regarding this will be gratefully received.

This feature has been implemented in the nightly builds, right click and select "Play from Here"
