roden Wrote:Ok guys im all up and running, Finally have installing sussed sort of Wink, ip address sorted, everything is running great, but can only run in software mode on video output, so i am going to attemp to install these now..

Whats libvaa, i have an ATI Radeon 4300, in there i believe.
Whats a shell lol, trust me just explaining will be quicker and less painfull for us all Smile

livaa? lucid ? shell?

{noobiefriendlymodeon}
libva is kind of a driver and needed for the hardware video acceleration
lucid = ubuntu 10.04
shell = the window/black screen where you type commands in
see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix-Shell

no it didn't. seems build-essential is not available on lucid... hmm

maybe you need to activate the multiverse/universe repositories.

please try this 1st.
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential xz-utils

if it succeeds to install those package
run again from step:
sudo apt-get install -y build-essential cdbs fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf

Well now i know how to install it its actually quite easy, its just a really stupid menu system that makes everything look harder than it really is, stupid if u ask me.

Installed the graphics drivers or so it seems, but have no idea how to configure them, as nothing has appeared?

ok I have managed to get your libva compiled on ppa https://launchpad.net/~x3lectric/+archive/vaapi just have to wait until packages are published then type on shell (also known as terminal) Wink
Code:
sudo aptitude install python-software-properties pkg-config -y
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x3lectric/vaapi
apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libva-dev libva1

I think thats it to install vaapi, Im not a ATI user so idk.

You will need it for hardware acceleration decoding playback.

cheers

Ok installed and rebooted XBMC

I still have the following options in the menu

Enable VDPAU Acceleration,

On Options i get

Advanced Shaders (GLSL) - System reboots if i play a video while selected
Basic Shaders (ARB) - System reboots if i play a video while selected
Software - Works But slow on 1080p

Am i to do anything else as nothing has changed?

Um maybe i installed the wrong version, i used the guide here:-
http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/xbmc-ion/

Should i re-install using the Live CD?

no

I think vaapi is only available in Newer xbmc you also according to what I read have to compile xbmc from source with vaapi enabled...

Im not sure if you wanna do that or not, Im not even sure if your card supports hardware accelerated video decoding.

Its not complicated considering what you have achieved in two days is a walk in the park.

Well if i run XBMC from windows everything works well, but im starting to get peed off now Sad, was almost there....

I think you are right, looking at the windows version i get a DXVX2 option, and a Pixel Shaders option, and it runs very fast. So, Off we go again! LOL!

Why is everybody on Lucid? I think they're not entirely Lucid. Running a version as old as that for a modern multimedia app like XBMC is asking for trouble.
