That is probably because of composite. XBMC hates composite.

Absolute massive thanks to u all. Installed open elec tweaked the screen size and audio settings and ... It's perfect. Streaming 720p and it runs like a dream. Using xbmc commander for iPhone as keyboard and mouse.
