I was recently thinking about getting a MacBook air. I would like to use it like a normal laptop when I'm not home' but once I'm home I would like to connect it to my tv via an hdmi adaptor and run xbmc at 1080p to the tv. Does anyone have any experience in getting this to work?

There's no reason why it shouldn't work. I believe older MDP to HDMI adapters work with the newer Thunderbolt/MDP ports. You plug it in and you get a second display.
