aoaaron Wrote:haha alright so 100% going for Astraweb. I think I'll grab the 12month deal. 8$/amonth it works out to be is ridiculously low.

now for my backup/block account.. which is better to grab any missing pieces? blocknews looks good but will they be able to fill in the missing blanks better than other block accounts?

Very tempting. Guess I have to pull the trigger at this price. Is a backup/block really needed?

If you don't care about retention, LightningUsenet is the way to go: 10€ for 100 days.

What he means is that with the other plans, you can easily cancel via a button on the web. To cancel the special though, you need to email them.

You should always find out from others first what completion rates are like on the really old stuff because signing up with someone and then finding out nothing is complete on really old stuff isn't much fun

As well as usenetreviewz your also find discounts through the site below

http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/

I myself am with "Supernews" which is basically Giganews its owned and run by them its how the sell discounted packages same quality of service using the same servers, this is also true of PowerUsenet and Usenet.net

If you sign up through "usenetreviewz" you can get it for $9.99 a month or $99 for a year, I repeat this is basically Giganews Wink

http://www.supernews.com/super-special/

As for Blocknews I have a backup account with them and completion is very good right up to there longest retention

Supernews uses the Giganews servers, is $9.99/month unlimited (look for special offer site), and just increased retention to over 1000 days. I have not had any problems in 2 months since I switched over from Giganews.

damn a spanner in the works with supernews now. :S

i want to download some old stuff. dmca takedowns is a bit of a worry with supernews? would a block account solve this?

do either work better in dodging sky/bt's peak hour traffic shaping?

Try THUNDERNEWS, SSL 1024 DAYS RETENTION £6 PER MONTH. 50 CONNECTIONS.. YOU FIND THE DEAL IN THE USENETREVIES AS MENTIONED ABOVE.

I use Hitnews. Very cheap, retention is 500 days growing to 1000 days and account sharing is allowed.

Forgot to mention yesterday about dmca takedowns this does effect supernews as its giganews it also applies to some of the other larger news servers, the only time I have come across this with supernews is with stuff from HBO I haven't had this problem with anything else and I've been with Giganews, Supernews, PowerUsenet for a very long time

For HBO stuff I just add a single connection to my blocknews account to fill in the missing blocks so I only use a minimal amount of bandwidth of my blocknews account as its not totally removed from Supernews most of it remains, I've only experienced this once with "Boardwalk Empire" and I used way less than 1GB of my blocknews account for all episodes in 720p

I've never heard it happen with anything other than HBO stuff I guess that's one advantage of Astraweb over others

I very much doubt any news server will get round traffic shaping because they probably use the servers address I know it was possible once to get round traffic shaping by using SSL but that's when they where using different methods to identify the traffic

This might be a question out of left field, but a friend of mine was recently on one of the Food Network TV shows. I've scoured the Internet looking for a torrent of the show and can't find it anywhere. Then I thought of Usenet. I don't want to pay for it unless the show is currently available in HD for download because I'm not sure that I would use it for much else right now.

Is there a search engine I can use, or do you need an account first? I'm looking for Restaurant Impossible S02E01 in 720p or above.

what servers does usenetserver use? I used to have supernews however alot of my downloads were missing articles so I had to get another server, blocknews. I switched to usenetserver and so far it has been working fine. But I have only had it for like a week without heavy downloading.

Newshosting here. Been using them for years. Tried Astraweb and didn't like it for some reason (honesty can't remember why). But went back to Newshosting. Very few incompletes with the exception of the HBO shows (Sopranos, Broadwalk Empire).

I think your Supernews experience is pretty unusual unless they were HBO :confused2:
