Just pick a skin that is compatible with nighties.

Its just i notice the textures in the atv look very simple kind of like a computer running at 256 colours, hense the question

I downloaded hitchers addon then navigated to it to install alaska but nothing shows up? I am running the nightly from 11 july so it should be OK I thought?

I can help with my skin only. You better ask in Alaska forum about a version that's recommended for nightly builds.

I use Alaska Revisited and it works great on ATV2. Manually drop the skin folder into the Addons folder of ATV2 then just select it in settings.

Thanks clay but unless i am being a moron the only way to get alaska would appear to be from hitchers repo
