I'm running xbmc 10.1 on a winxp platform. Unfortunately if i remote-desktop to the machine, xbmc wont start up. It returns an error. Ive tried using the web interface that comes with 10.1. Its ok for navigating media, but i cant see how to use it to configure xbmc.

So my question is, whats the best way to configure xbmc remotely? Is there a good web-interface addon i can try? Or would something like VNC allow me to run xbmc via a remote session?

Check out RealVNC... I think it's pay, but it has the feature of having a built in java applet that it can launch in a remote browser, so you can get at your pc anywhere without a special client.

I like ThinVNC. You only need to install ThinVNC on your XBMC machine (no client software needed on other computers). You can remote to your server from any O/S using an HTML 5 compliant browser so no client needs to be installed.

When XBMC is full screen I only see a black window also, but I just hit "\" to change it to windowed mode and I can see and interact with the XBMC interface fine. When i'm done, I just hit "\" to make it fullscreen again and then disconnect.

Thanks for the tip re ThinVNC - gonna check it out! TeamViewer is good, but once you end your connection it pops up a message saying "thanks for using the free version" or something like that, which is annoying.

Hopefully ThinVNC will work through my office network as well! Big Grin

Also, pressing Alt + Enter will change XBMC to window mode, as it does for other apps.
