But the 2010 model won't allow for bit streaming HD audio formats Wink

Open6l Wrote:Yeah - I also had all sorts of these gfx glitches with my 2011-Intel3000HD - most seemed to go away with the latest nightly but the poor performance is still there.

Can OSX 10.6 be installed on these new Mini's?

well - I have 2 weeks before I have to return either the 2010 or 2011... I'm hoping within that timeframe whatever the issue is with the 2011 Intel version will be resolved (fingers crossed).

you would need the drivers which are not avail for 10.6. Natively I would say no - might require some tweaking/hacking to get that to work.

Yet another observation - take a 1080i transport clip and turn on deinterlace. CPU shoots up to 123% constant on the Mac mini 2011. Take the exact same clips (tried 3 different HD Getaways clips and the Last Shuttle Our Journey clip) and the Mac mini 2010 barely cracks 65% CPU and no dropped frames.

I'm glad I saw this thread before I purchased my new MacMini... I was suppose to sell my late 2009 (core2Duo) Mac Mini with the Nvidia gfx on Wednesday and buy the new 2011 Mac Mini but I definitely don't want to do it until it's confirmed that the performance will be ok in Lion.

OS: Leopard 10.5.6
Processor: 2x Quad Core Intel 2.8Ghz Xeon
Internal Storage: 2.4TB [4x 600GB Western Digital]
External Storage: Drobo 4.5TB
Memory: 14GB PC-6400 800mhz FB-ECC Ram
Apple Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard
Apple Remote

This thread is really making me wonder. From the raw specs, the CPU alone (no GPU decoding), the entry level i5 mac mini should do 1080 without frame dropping (there are always exceptions, but generally speaking)

Maybe I'll go over to an Apple Store some time this week and try using XBMC on the mac minis in there. If I do I'll bring a usb drive with some test clips.

I would not be surprised if these issues were fixed with a minor update from Apple. I've heard that 10.7.1 is already in the pipeline, because devs already have the 10.7.2 beta. There's always little bumps when a new product comes out, and the new Mac Mini is both new hardware with a new OS.

so far i haven't had any issues, other than getting my harmony to work right. i have the 799 model with ATI graphics. i haven't tried any bitstreaming yet, as i had a flood this weekend which killed my HTPC and the reason i went and grabbed the new mac mini. 2 of my 2 TB drives were killed which had stuff with HD Audio on them

Seems like to 3000 graphics model can be coaxed into 10.6 according to this.
