MCE Remote?
#1
Question
Hello,

I bought this remote off the bay item number - 120746179937

The remote inside the back cover says RC6 ir

Under the human interface devices its only listed as hid compliant not "Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver". although when i plug the reciever in i briefly see the os pick it up as an mce remote reciever spinal plus?

Is this a cheap non genuine remote or am i missing something?

I bought it in good faith it was a genuine mce remote - Limited Edition Microsoft Windows Remote Control and Receiver for Media Center - Microsoft Remote Control and Receiver for Media Center

most of the buttons work in xbmc but for instance the i button does nothing whereas in media centre it brings up info as it should.

any thoughts? :confused2:

Grab ShowKey from http://xbmcmce.sourceforge.net/. If you run this then press buttons on the remote, Showkey will tell you what signals the remote is sending. Note the results for a few sample buttons e.g. Play and Stop, and of course the "i" button, and post them here and that should help us identify the remote.

I had a look at the eBay posting, and it doesn't look like a Microsoft remote although it's pretty similar. See http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Control_Reviews for pictures of Microsoft and other remotes.

The ebay posting doesn't show the receiver (it's still wrapped up) and that's actually the key bit. Can you post a picture of the receiver somewhere? Alternatively is there any manufacturer's name and part number on the bottom of the receiver?

Also what version of Windows are you using?

That looks just like the results you'd get from a driver that's using the eHome remote. Try installing the MCERemote add-on and see if it works. Install the add-on from System settings, Add-ons, Get Add-ons, XBMC.org Add-ons, Program Add-ons. After installation go to the home screen them Programs then MCERemote and select "Apply current settings to remote". Exit XBMC and restart Windows. Now run ShowKey again and see if the Info and coloured buttons send anything.

i have to unplug the reciever and the plug back into a usb slot for windows to then load it up again and then remote works but with same issues as originally stated no i button in xbmc etc

I'd have to test the remote myself to find out how it's working. I guess it isn't using the eHome driver, but how else it's working I don't know. Your options are to put up with no Info button or to get a different remote.

Later: the receiver must be looking at the bit of the registry used by the eHome driver, otherwise MCERemote would have had no effect. The fact that MCERemote broke the receiver must mean that it uses the same bit of the registry as the eHome driver but with a different format. If you're really determined you could export the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HidIr\Remotes\745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da\ReportMappingTable

and post it here. It might be obvious how to modify it to make the Info button work. However it might be a lot easier, and probably quicker, to just get a new remote.

That's exactly the same as the registry on my PC (and my remote works) so I think it's a dead end.

ok will contact seller and get refunded as its not a microsoft remote as advertised, many thanks for your help.

Well it's not made by Microsoft. However there is no real standard for what constitutes a Windows remote, except that it has to work with Windows Media Center. Looking at the ebay post, it isn't clear to me that the vendor is claiming it's an eHome remote. Still, it's worth asking for a refund.

Look at http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Control_Reviews for remotes known to work with XBMC. The eHome remotes are generally listed first. The HP remotes are widely available on ebay and reasonably cheap. Genuine MS remotes seem to go for a lot of money these days.

I had a quick look on ebay and there are lots of handsets listed, but you need a handset and receiver. Look at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300579644226 which is a genuine Microsoft remote. Expect to pay £25-£30 though.
