Stream from an HTPC that is in standby
#1
Hello forum,

I am currently managing two HTPC's on my network both running W7 and XBMC, both are set to standby/sleep after 20min of inactivity. I am trying to stream media from the HD's on an inactive HTPC from the other HTPC's/Devices on the network.

So, is there a way to stream media from the HD's on an HTPC that is in sleep/standby mode?

You could look into using Wake on Lan (WoL) calls to wake the server when it is needed by another device. I'm pretty sure XBMC has a WoL plugin that should work.

Two frontends is a great reason to look at some sort of centralized media storage device. I've never been a fan of storing media on the frontends. Leads to problems like this. WoL might be an option. Probably need to remote into your router and send magic packets from there.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep them coming! Looking for a one-step solution really but I will at least try all the suggestions that are offered.

Please explain more or suggest a post that discusses centralized storage options!
