RSS feeds in XBMC
#1
Hi

I'm relatively new to XBMC. I use it for Vista.
I've recently tried to add RSS feeds in two ways:

a) I added a new feed to ...Program Files\XBMC\Userdata\RssFeeds.xml
b) I created a new Video source in XBMC

I have tried, for example, this feed:

http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsplayer_...ch/rss.xml

Now, my two questions are:

1) Perhaps a newbie question, but still: Where in XBMC am I supposed to see the RSS feeds that are specified in the RssFeeds.xml file? I simply cannot see any RSS feeds anywyere. I use the Confluence skin.

2) When adding an RSS feed as Video source, XBMC complains "unable to connect.." when saving and when I click the source after saving it.

I've Googled for guide on how to make RSS feeds work, but not found any good explanations that I could attempt to replicate. Some say I should add the feeds to the RssFeeds.xml file, but that doesn't help much when I can't see any of the feeds in XBMC ;-)

Any help for the newbie, please..?
Thanks.

In SYSTEM > APPEARANCE you do have SHOWS RSS NEWS FEEDS checked correct? If so under that you can now just add your feed there. You should see an EDIT button.

OR adding it or changing the current feed in C:\Program Files\XBMC\userdata\RssFeeds.xml should work too.

In Confluence you should see your RSS feed at the bottom of the screen on the home screen:

And of course you have to be conencted to the internet. You should see a default RSS feed when you install XBMC. IF not then you are probably having internet connectivity issues.

OK, thanks for that.

Perhaps I've misunderstood, but I thought RSS Feeds could be used for much more than just the newsfeed scroller at the bottom of the page.

For example: The RSS Feed I provided as an example, should give access to BCC videos. I assume this cannot be represented as a scrolling "News feed" at the bottom of the page.

So basically my mor specific question is:

If I add 10 RSS feeds to the RssFeeds.xml file. Where am I supposed to see these RSS feeds in XBMC?

For example, if I add this RSS feed to the XML file:

http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsplayer_...ch/rss.xml

I would expect to see a page or something in XMBC that presents me with a list of the videos that this RSS feed brings.

I'm connected to Internet. Radio stations (which I added in a playlist and access via "Music" in XBMC) work prefectly.

(PS: I've read the http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=RSS_Feeds page. But it only says to add RSS feeds to the XML file. It does not explain what I am supposed to see in XBMC as a consequence, and were I will see it).

Cheers.

OK.. I now understand that the ...Program Files\XBMC\userdata\RssFeeds.xml controls which news feed to use at the scrolling news feed line.

So that's settled. Thanks Smile.

My second, unsolved question is how to add other RSS feeds

(for example http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsplayer_...ch/rss.xml) to XMBC. I tried to add it as a source (Movies -> Add Source), but I get the "Could not connect to Network Server" error message.

Was this ever solved, I've looked at http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=RSS_Feeds many times and I've googled for hours, how do you add a custom rss video feed?
