Remote Problems

First and foremost I want to post my specs, etc.
XBMC - dharma 10.1
Windows 7 64 bit - patched up to 8/15/11
Amd athlon x2
2gb RAM
SAPPHIRE 5450 512mb GPU- drivers up to date
Acoustic Research arrx15g Universal remote
serial port ir receiver

So I have been using xbmc for some time now and recently built a dedicated box for the media room. I already have a universal remote that has worked perfect for me. I did a lot of research about using universal remotes with xbmc and i decided that it would be easiest if I used winlirc and eventghost to control both xbmc and wmc for dvr. I worked every thing out and it works but not like I expected. So I went back to the forums and dug a little deeper and I found a thread that discussed folding winlirc into xbmc in just the same way the lirc had been for linux. The developers said to wait until after revision 10 dropped and go from there. Well the thread has been dead for some time now. I know their is a way to use mce remotes to a varied success, but has anyone actually gotten a acoustic research to work. I see people all the time using harmony remotes but that is in junction with harmony software. And also, would it be possible to use my remote with a usb rc6 receiver and cut out winlirc and eventghost.

That's what I would do. I'm not familiar with the arrx15g remote, but most universal remotes can emulate the Microsoft remote or MCE keyboard because it's the nearest thing to a standard that there is in the world of PCs.

Someone else hereabouts was looking for a cheap receiver, hang on ... aha, how about http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004PXJGXU. That gives you the handset as well, so you can learn from the handset if the arrx15g can't emulate an MCE remote.

See http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Usi...in_Windows for the incantations necessary to get the HP receiver configured.

It would be nice if winlirc was supported in xbmc. Since lirc is supported, it should be a piece of cake to do since the protocol is the same ..
WinLIRC, the Windows port of LIRC (Linux Infrared Remote Control):

Active development of the WinLIRC package:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/winlirc/
LIRC config files for supported remote controls:

My only problem with using winlirc with xbmc is I have to use a serial port. And using that I cant not put my HTPC to sleep and wake it up without a mouse or keyboard, with a usb receiver I can do this. But wouldnt all we need to do is communicate with the eventclient just like lirc in linux?

In Windows remotes generally work by emulating a keyboard, so neither Eventghost nor LIRC are necessary in most (not all) circumstances.

In Windows there is no standard for apps to use remote controls. Even the Microsoft remote, which is the closest thing to a standard, uses an unholy mixture of keyboard emulation, WM_APPCOMMAND messages and WM_RAWINPUT messages, so it's hardly a clean interface. While LIRC is a standard, it has such little penetration into the Windows market that we have little enthusiasm for supporting it, particularly since the vast majority of remote controls work perfectly well as it is.

But you are referring to using the usb receiver that is usually included with mce remotes, right?
