Dell Zino and NAS
#1
Hey everyone, newbie here!

I wanted to ask for some advice on an HTPC. I'm looking at getting an HTPC to upgrade from the seagate theater+ i've been using. Been looking at the zino, the top end one with quad-core processor and blu-ray player, 6 gig ram.

I want to be able play my dvd isos and various 1080p mkvs, also i would like the unit to be able to play blu-rays, so i wouldn't need a separate player. No really extreme specs, no 3d, no massive HD audio, no streaming stuff from internet. I don't plan on encoding my Blu-rays to the drives anytime soon. Just want a system to play my dvd isos (about 2000ish not all in isos yet) and some mkvs.

So would the zino cut it?

Also I would prefer an out-of-the-box system, not comfortable doing much beyond replacing a drive or ram in a computer.

Any recommendations for an out-of-the-box NAS system? Using external HDDs right now, but want to upgrade at some point.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

You don't really need the quad core version. I would go with this version:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/c...ino-hd-410

This one has the bluray drive, remote and HD 5450 discrete card which will also give you HD audio.

By out-of-the-box NAS, do you mean with HDD already installed?

If not, go with any Synology or Qnap and you'll be fine in terms of ease of configuration and reliability.

How much space do you need today and in 3 yr from now?

by out of the box NAS i'd perfer one without HDs. Would want to select my own. I figure a 4 bay with 2-3tb drives would be more than enough

These NAS are a good choice IMHO :

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=56532&...logy%20Inc. -> Can support up to 4x3TB drives (see compatibility list to make sure your HDD are OK)

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.asp...6822107064 -> notice the 2xeSATA port which is not present on the Synology. This gives you extra storage capacity when your 4 HDD are full.

Personally I'd go with the Qnap, but you can't go wrong with the Synology or Qnap.
