Replace OS with something else?
#1
Hi Guys,

So, after the horrible experience with a Raspberry PI and OpenELEC - I've decided to move to a HTPC with some actual power and not be limited in what I can and cannot do, due to H/W restrictions.

So - what I would like to do is build a HTPC that has something like OpenELEC as the only OS - and have XBMC running and grabbing the data from a MYSQL box.

Now, I got the MYSQL bit down - but is there something that can replace the Windows OS completely? Or do I need a host OS for this sort of XBMC setup?

Thanks in advance!

You can use openelec as the HTPC OS
http://openelec.tv/index.php/get-openelec

You can install XBMC on most OS's

You can run XBMCbuntu which is linux but is a streamlined version that makes it easy for users not familiar with linux to run XBMC on linux without much hassle

You do not need Windows at all, I have half a dozen XBMC machines and none run on windows and they all talk to a MySQL DB running on a separate linux machine.
