Try speaker-test -Dplughw:0,7

Or speaker-test -Dplughw:0,3 (My system use this output, I don't know what the three others are made for 7, 8 & 9)

How about an error with the Connection between HDMI and the TV?

Code:
xbmc@XBMCLive:~$ sudo aplay -Dplughw:0,7 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

Since the machine does not complain about the fact that the sound could not be played, maybe the problem is a config problem with the tv at my computer?

The TV works, the Cable is ok and the card also works - at least when using windows...

BTW: is it normal that alsamixer only shows two S/PDIF-Entries that can only be unmuted / muted and that there is no mixer?

You can try to unplug and plug the cable and watch if your TV is seen in /var/log/messages:

kernel: HDMI: supports coding type AC-3: channels = 6, rates = 44100 48000 88200, max bitrate = 680000

Yes, it's digital output, you can't set the volume.

What i did is basically this:
-installed XBMC LIVE
-updated alsa to 2.0.4
-installed latest NVidia drivers

GT520 is a new card and the last nvidia driver series is 275 not 195.

I do not like this line:

Code:
Sep  1 18:07:37 XBMCLive kernel: [   17.096588] NVRM: in this system is not supported by the [color=red]195.36.24[/color] NVIDIA Linux

It seems like the graphics driver did not get installed correctly.

Try these commands to upgrade the drivers:

Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-iquik/nvidia-vpau
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current libvdpau1
sudo reboot

Then try the above speaker-test command.

Actually i downloaded the latest Linux 32 Bit installation file at nvidia's homepage...

Strange that it's not been up to date.

Still, there is no sound.

Just installed XBMClive again and did the following:

-removal of any preinstalled NVidia and alsa-drivers / utilities
-installation of Alsa 1.0.24 using this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=261366

-installation of NVidia Drivers by doing this:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-iquik/nvidia-vpau
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current libvdpau1
sudo reboot

Still there is no sound.

I just picked up the Zotac Nvidia GT520. I'm having the same problems. I do not see any errors, but I get no sound. I've tried all the things you had listed in this post. Have you had any more success?

This is my fourth pc and I've had no problems with HDMI audio prior to the Zotac Nvidia card. i have no idea what's going on.

I got the sound going last night. I rebooted then looked at dmesg to see what formats were supported by my receiver. I noticed 8 channel was, so I tried that with speaker-test and it worked. Then the 2 and 6 channel started working also. I,m in business now! But, I really don't understand why it works now and not before.
