My laptop, when it was working, had no trouble playing xbmc with Windows. That is, until the video decided to take a dive on me. Now, I have a laptop out of warranty with good parts. Has anyone been able to take a CPU from a laptop and throw it into some kind of htpc?

Laptop CPUs are often soldered to their motherboards. Only thing you maybe could reuse is the RAM (in a Micro ATX build) and its HD/SSD.

true, like if the RAM and HDD fit in a pre-built Nettop such as the ZOTAC ND22!

Even if the CPU was in a socket, it will be a mobile specific socket, not one that occurs on desktop boards.
